Exercise and weight issues.

Hi, I was delighted that Sax started a thread about exercise, but it didn't get very far.
Has anyone got any good ideas about exercising and / or losing weight. I find my weight gradually increasing because I am not very mobile and when I try exercising I feel dreadful for days if I overdo it.
ROM exercises are easy enough, but is there something else I could do that won't damage my joints. (Apart from swimming as I can't climb in and out of the pool!)
Oh, and I can't walk very far either!

    Hi Moodyblue,

I think its often so hard eh? Like you i am becoming slower and slower and putting on weight as well. I think it might eb an idea to ask for the physio's ideas on what is or isn't safe exercise for you maybe?

I push my luck and pay for it for days and well thats just not sensible eh?

Some gyms run things for people with limited mobility so that might also be an idea for you. good luck and let us know how it goes please? Cris x

    Hi Jan

Would you be able to use an exercise bike if you altered the pressure of the pedals? That is good exercise. I do stretching exercise as well as 10 mins on the exercise bike and 15 minutes hula hooping (nothing fancy!) but I must admit for the past few weeks I have not because I am having problems with my neck and it is affecting my arms and legs.

I must get to bed now, it is morning already!

    Morning moodyblue

Don't rule out swimming yet as l find it the one which does the least harm for me. Our pool has a hoist if people can't get in and out and you shoudl check if there are any sessions for those with mobility issues.

The other think of course is short walks??? (very short to start with).

    Morning,
I'm having the same problem myself although I am not overweight yet.
I do swim and find it very relaxing once I'm in the water.
I have osteoporosis as well as OA and swimming doesn't harm this it just doesn't do any good.
I go for 2 shortish walks a day with my little dog and even then I am shattered when I get back.I haven't seen a pysio yet as there was a 22 week wait but hopefully I'm moving up as I was referred in May.
Really hard isn't it,trying to find something that doesn't knock you out for days.
Sorry not much help but if you can see a pysio they should be able to suggest something.
Hope you sort something out soon

    Hi

I dont know what ROM exercises are so sorry if i dont understand that....

I have lost 1.5 stone as i have osteochrondritis dissecans in left knee and am losing weight to get new knee...
Swimming, hydrotherapy can cater for any disability, as other has said hoist to get in and out, aids to keep you afloat and exercises to be started off and monitored, have to be sent by doctor where i live.
Secondly i go to gym one to one and started off doing mainly exercises with arms, now progressed to cardio ones and have dumbells at home which do arm curls, bicep curls...Also do straight leg/bent leg raises in bed (15 each side) and do 20 half sit ups before i get dressed every morning...Can do knee bends just sat in chair if cant get up...

    Good luck...

    Thanks for all your support.
I really fancy trying hula hooping. Haven't done that since the 1950s!
I suppose cardio is the way to burn calories. But how when I have rheumatoid arthritis? Even climbing stairs is getting tricky.
ROM is range of motion exercising that the physios showed me. Move every joint, gently, every day. But for flexibility, not strength.
Hmmmm... Back to the diet plans...

    Hi Jan

Just a thought, could you use weights whilst doing the ROM exercises ie a bottle of water/baked beans tin in each hand or weights on your ankles ?

    Hi
Elna has just said what I was going to, any exercise is better than none...even if you have to sit in a chair..use tins of food to add weight, but only you know how far you can push it.
    Good Luck
