Arcoxia - Side Effects.

I'm on 120mg Arcoxia. Does any one else get the side effect of taste alteration? Took me a while to eliminate the other stuff and stopping the Arcoxia for two days sorted it out.

Just wondering if I should go on a lower dose - I'm not complaining as-such but it's playing havoc because there is nothing that tastes like it should when on them and it took over a year to get them prescribed, and then only after my GP took me of the diclo's.

I looked it up and it's under the 'less common side-effects' but I'm wondering how common it is, because they work for me - well, for about 8-12 hours anyhoooo.

I'm enjoying a metallic coppery beer that tastes like carpet at the mo!

There are some drugs that do cause taste alteration, it's annoying, irritating and sometimes distressing (especially when it comes to beer  ) but I suppose one has to trade the benefits against the side effect/s. My taste altered some time ago but despite dropping the drug which was the culprit (according to me and my consultant) my tongue still isn't right. It's also yellow. 8 - 12 hours? That sounds a good stretch of benefit time to me, do you take them morning and night? My favourite anti-inflammatories were celebrex, they worked. DD

    Hiya DD!

Yep - benefits and all that. Got to look on the bright side I guess.

Only meant to take 1 a day so I neck one in the morning, and about 40 mins later the pain subsides but the taste thing kicks off. I'm on the highest dose of them - the 120mgs.

I found my tongue yellows at times despite brushing regularly too. It's another of 'those things' I guess. You're not alone there!

Celebrex - not tried that one! When my new Rheumy is finally appointed I'll enquire.

Hope you are as well and fabby as can be, DD.

    Hi Stu

I have been on arcoxia for a long time now and I do not get that side effect. I was taken off diclo after about 2 years when they suddenly did not agree with me. I have only recently started taking two 60mg arcoxia daily - for quite a time I found one was enough.

Do you think you could manage on just one a day and perhaps your taste buds would not be affected or a least not so much.

    Hi Stu

I take Arcoxia too, and no nasty taste for me. But I have had to stop taking them as they are not agreeing with me at all. Lots of dyspepsia which affects my asthma so not sure whats next now as I'm missing them!

Side effects, I find that my appetite increased a lot when I started mtx, so hence weight gain ++, which is horrible but other people find the opposite. Cant be nice to have this side effect you're suffering from Stu, must be getting you down a bit.

There are plenty of other anti-inflams, I know you waited 2 years but I suppose you have to weigh up the risk (taste) versus benefit for yourself and decide

    Good luck

    Hiya Elna.

Good point actually and sort of where I was aiming at. Maybe it's my high dose perhaps... I take 1 120mg tablet a day in the am - the largest dose of Arcoxia you can be given and I don't have the 60mg's at all, but I think I may ask the GP to give me smaller ones and try just one 60mg a day and see if that helps.

That particular side effect is, I believe, less common, so perhaps its just me.

Oh, nice to meet you! :)

Hiya Janie, and good to meet you.

Mmmmm... dyspepsia; I do get a bit of that too but then I assumed it was the pain meds (Tramadol and coco's when required). My appetite is dreadful these days - I seem to get a window of about 2 hours of hunger and the rest of the time, I'm almost forcing food down, which funnily enough I blamed on my MTX injections so I guess, like this flipping RA thing in general, it just totally affects people in different ways.

The taste alteration side effect is OK really - just a bit odd. Certainly the benefits are better than the alternative, and I guess looking at the replies it could be that indeed the thing is a rare side effect as is mentioned in the literature.

    Cheers Janie,

    Stu :)

    Hi Stu

funny you should mention arcoxia because l have been having proper shoulder-blade ache (I know odd... :???: ) and wondered if it was the arcoxia doing it so stopped for three days.

Wasn't them the pain carried on so restrated them last night....bliss

l am lucky my sense of taste seems to be ok....ish most things taste ok except for my favourite fruit juice (mango and passion fruit) which tastes well-weird

Hope you are doing ok otherwise today Stu

    Love

    Toni xx

I've been on 90mg for a month now and I've not noticed an alteration in my taste buds.

Very impressed with them, they do massively help to reduce the pain!

I'm still not used to how tired they make me feel though, I have bought a pill splitter so take half at 7am and the other at 11am with my tramadol.

    Hi Debbie

I can definitely see the point of splitting them. Thank you, as I really did not think of that!! That is such a good idea!

Even if I still get this side effect, I maybe won't get the real bad crash late in the evening when they wear off as a result of the one 120mg in the morning that I currently take... that would be so cool!

    Hi Stu,

I am not on them but its funny you should say about taste,..... I have an endless cold now for I think (and Toni can verify this) all but 3 years and thats drug related and might be why i don;t taste too good.

Never thought though it might be the drugs.... I am lucky though I have a reasonable pain control things and for me lack of taste or coppery taste to be exact is something I didn't think might be from the drugs

I hope that Debbie's idea of splitting them will help you.

Hope, as well, they will help and work for you. Cris x

    Hi Suzanne

Arthritis Research UK say that "NSAIDs are not generally recommended during pregnancy. If you are planning a family or become pregnant you should discuss this with your doctor as soon as possible. Some recent studies suggest that NSAIDs taken around the time of conception may increase the risk of miscarriage. Paracetamol does not have this effect."

I also read that Arcoxia can decrease fertility.

If I were you I would have a chat with the gp about it.
