Awful sad day my dog has arthritis, I hate this disease!

Well what a horrible day, my poor dog has not only had three lumps removed from his neck and leg and has stitches and a drain in his leg he also been diagnosed with arthritis!
I am devastated I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy especially not my own dog, they have given him steroid injection with three more to go to see how effective they are. He is on equivalent of cod liver oil and will be on anti inflams forever and maybe other options as well.
Why is this disease so cruel, I can't stop crying every time I look at him. Xx

Hi Anky,
I am sorry this one has happened as well.... There is a huge amount they can do though flower.
Its good the lumps have gone and just wanted to assure you there is a huge amount they can do....
I had a rescue ex breed machine lab.... from a puppy farm and she was riddled cus of how she had been kept..... you know the kind of thing , small cage, concrete floor and not even a bit of new paper... oh how I hate puppy farms....
Anyway we started on metacm, it worked for a while, the on to a big tablet I can;t remember the name of.... previcox! go tit.
Then when that stopped working she went on to medrone tablets... now that i the end of the rod but fro her it worked for well over a year....
I had a lovely sheep.... one eared and a thinker. Got her at 10 hours old and she was my girl...
Lost her to this sodding bone shift and Anky I so know how you feel.... Wish has it now and we are starting the climb....
There really is so much they can do.
Just wanted to tell you that and leave you a ((((( ))))) and a bucket of total understanding on this one. Cris xx0 -
no words will do just sorry to read this and (((()))) valval0

Hi anky
So sorry to hear this
My old dog had arthritis too he was on rymadyl anti inflams he loved taking them as they were meat flavoured. Apparently dogs can overdose on them as they like them so much they do anything to get them. It telex him as he was still very active with them.
Hope your dog gets the treatment that helps soon

Morning all,
Thank you so very much for your kind words and reassurance, we have had a really bad night with him. He has five wounds and if you put them together would measure about 12 inches, he won't lay down, he won't sleep and he hates the collar. Been in touch with the vet and given him more pain relief, he eating and drinking but is hating the collar most of all which is upsetting him. He on metacam, cod liver oil at the minute as well as pain stuff.
I think I am struggling to think my boy has this awful disease when I know what I go through and don't want him to, plays with your head as we all know don't we?
Chris, thank you for your wise words, it's nice to know you have been here and you got through it. I am sure with meds he will be fine long term but he having very bad time at minute and hate seeing him like this he is like my baby. What an amazing person to do what you did with a dog from the puppy farm. Xx
Val, Barbara, Rose again thank you for the support it means so much, nobody understands how this disease makes you feel and knowing he it really hurts my heart. Xx
Hilleena he is a Cairn Terrier so only a little thing although she said he has to lose weight now. He is very stubborn and has a mind of his own. Thanks for your kind words. Xx
Teresa loved the story he will love them if they meat flavour, have been putting his tablets in piece of chicken and he eats it straight down. To be honest he eats anything. Xx
Well peeps I guess although I am so sad the state Taz is in at the minute with his operation I am also very sad that he has arthritis as I and you all know how hard it can be, but I do agree that dogs are more resilient than humans. I am already exhausted and was having a flare before this so I know what I am going to be like over next few days but just want my boy to be more settled. Thank you all once again, feeling the hugs from you all and needing thm at minute. XxxxAS Sufferer

Hi Anky
Hugs for you and your dear dear dog Taz.
Bless him the worst thing for him will be that collar. When my poor cat had cancer on his ears they put a collar on and in the end allowed me to take it if he didn't scratch them which he didn't so as soon as things are looking more healed it can come off l am sure.
As for the arthritis....well that is so upsetting, but remember one thing...he wont be worrying like you. He will take his meds and be a good bit better than he is now once they are sorted for him.
You are tearful because part of you feels guilty that you have put him through the op, BUT you know you did the right thing don't you. It is your duty as a responsible pet owner. You Did it so well-done.
Love and hugs for you and pats and virtual chews for Taz

Hi Anky
I really do hope that things improve today...and he hopefully has a better night tonight....and please take care of yourself...Im sure you are forgetting this...
Sending you more hugs ((((())))Love

Toni,
You made me cry cos you are so right I feel so guilty to have done this to him although we had to know if it was cancer and eventually the lump on his leg would have made him immobile. I know logically it was the right thing to do but when you see those big sad eyes I just melt! The worst thing for him is the collar he won't lay down cos of it don know how he staying awake to be honest, I am exhausted and not full of what he had, or I prob am? He won't go to the loo in the house but won't go out either, just want this to be over. Xxfrogmorton wrote:Hi Anky

Hi Anky,
so sorry to hear about your dog. Hope Taz feels better soon. Regarding the collar - is he wearing one of those that looks like a lampshade? My vet gave me one for my dog recently that was a lot smaller, almost like a blown up rubber ring and this seemed so much better and more comfortable for the dog - he could eat his food, drink and lie down much easier with this on.
Regarding feeling guilty - don't - we do our best for our animals because we love them. I truly believe they know that you are trying to help them. My horse had to have a course of treatment for arthritis in her shoulder earlier this year - it involved some awful things but she was so good and patient all the way through it. The treatment worked but unfortunately the arthritis is now in her neck - she has now been retired and is living a fab life munching grass, being wrapped up warm in new rugs and sleeping on the biggest straw bed ever.
Look after yourself too
Take care xxxxxxx

Hi peeps,
I am soooo glad to report that my lovely little boy Taz is amazingly much better, he is walking around loads and been outside for a wee, is laying down and really much happier now. So lovely to have him 'back', know we will manage a good nights sleep tonight. He still looks awful with the wounds but he is so much happier and he is even wagging his tail!!!
Thank you all again for the wonderful support and hugs you have all sent. Xxx
Joan thank you for your kind words means a lot. Xx
Jan, yes it's the lampshade and it's so getting on his nerves but is managing to lay down with it now. Also trying to get it off so he getting better. Lovely to read about the help you gave your horse, animals bring out the good side in us. XxxAS Sufferer

Hi Anky,
So glad he is boucing back, they are so much more resilient than us aren;t they?
With the flower pit... as long as you are there to stop him licking or biting his wounds maybe he doesn't need it on if its really bothering him but he must have when your not able to watch him like a hawk.
Hey Skips one of my cats got hit by a car and broke his leg.... he had a flower put on and got it into his head that if he walked backwards a lot it would some off.....
I am about to intervean in Wish's treatment... vets jumped to metcam, horse one thats not going to do her liver much good.. possibly.. see with sheep nobody really knows cus they don;t get treated.....
My old girl was on cortavet for 4 years before she had to go over to tho metacam..... I wonder if its as good with dogs but it certainly worked for the old lady.
I have looked at the label's, as you do, and again the horse one is different to the dog and cat one so I don;t know how well it works.... Might be worth trying though?
Thy do a human one (not called the vet bit ) but it didn't do much for me though the vets said all that stuff id only useful in the earlier stages.
Long may Taz be a happy boy and Anky there is a whole lot of things behind they can give him so its going to be ok for some time yet.
Laving you a ((((( ))))) and a hope you got a good night and if Taz is allowed one a special wound healing and bone ease chew stick. Cris xx0 -
Yes they are much more resilient than us thankfully!
Funny you said that about your cat because Taz has decided if he walks around banging the collar into anything it might come off, he must have wicked headache. It's not accidental he doing it on purpose. They told us about taking it off when we were there but he not the kind of dog who would leave it alone and then he woukdnt have it back on so he will have to be patient.
We had good night last night and just gonna take him up the street and back because he desperately wants to go for a walk so thats a good sign. Xxskezier wrote:Hi Anky,

Hi, So sorry your poor dog has to suffer arthritis. A few weeks ago we had to take our 15 year old cat to the vets as he had a mouth and dental infection. At first the vet throught the lump was cancer, but after blood work and 2 weeks of antibiotics and on an anti inflammatory he seems a lot better.
The vet says he has arthritis in his back legs and the pain relief for his teeth has helped his arthritis!
I hope your dog gets better quickly, its horrible when they are ill, we get so attached to them. Good luck, love Sue & Max (Cat)!0 -

HI Anky,
Hope being taken up with you tonight will give and and poss you a better night. Bless him he doesn't understand but he will be a lot more comfortable once the drains have dome out.
I know my 3 legged one suffered so badly for the first 10 days following her leg removal, I was injecting her with the pain killer each day it was so bad. I should just say it was only cus i have some training i was allowed to inject her my self.
After the stitches came out she began to be ok again and has done 4.5 years easily. Time is up now but she had run, jumped and been a loon till very recently so Taz will be fine once he has recovered. Hang in there. ((((( ))))) and a chew stick if he is allowed one. Cris xx0
