I have had alot of sweling in last 7 months of having this polyarthritis and my hands look deformed as i have enormous swelling at base of my thumb on both sides, left & right as well as on the metacarpal joints on knuckles which is also right & left too and both wrists which have swollen out alng edges of the wrists too...the swelling has never left since march....I wondered if this, with thumb, pain and swelling, & with deep aching was more common in RA than OA?

Anyone else got / had this in the beginning before diagnosis ?

Thanks in advance hugs love senna xxxx

I had thumb base swelling and pain before diagnosed,gp thought it was oa ,then knuckle joints started to hurt and get slightly swollen to cut a long story short i was diagnosed with ra in sept last year after going through nearly two years of constant pain, once the diagnosis was confirmed and treatment started began to feel better.right hand is more deformed than left, but it has spread to feet and now knees are playing up.Mig

    Hi Senna

I do hope they hurry up and give you some proper help. Your appointment with rheumatology can't come quick enough can it? You must be so worried.

You are on hydroxy if l remember at the moment....they will likely add something else to the mix. Maybe it is worth asking if you can see an OT for some splints/something to help your poor hands?

I wish l could help you more, hopefully someone will be along in a bit with some more useful information.

    Love

Hi , Senna , I have RA and my hands are very mishapen ; my right hand is completely fused and only the thumb is moveable ; the left one is heading the same way . I am 30 years into this though , when mine started the main treatment was to be told , " gosh that must hurt , see you again in 6 mths " , nowadays a lot more can be , and is done ; talk to your rheumy about it all . Hi,
I am now totally confused.I have this pain and swelling in my right hand.
GP has diagnosed OA and I know I have osteopororis.
I have my first rheumy appointment on October 21st.The only reason I have this appointment is he also deals with OP.

So the way I'm reading this post is this pain and swelling in my hand could be RA.I've always had two lumpy fingers on this hand but they have never caused me any bother and still don't.
I just hope I can get some answers from this rheumy.
It's the not knowing that gets to me and 22 week wait to see a pysio.
I do hope you get some answers soon.
    Kindest regards May

hopefully yours might not be RA. A lot of folks on here with OA have thumb issues and often mishapen fingers too but often that can be the first joint of the finger....the DIP joint.

and of course it's always possible to have both.....at least you are seeeing the rheumatologist soon so can get some reassurance there or treatment.

    Love

Thanks Toni and sorry to Senna for butting in on her thread.
I'll just have to wait and see.
I have had this for a few months now but my GP has never done any blood tests and when I asked how she knew I had OA she said everything else has been ruled out, don't know how she managed this!!
So really I'm in limbo waiting and wishing the weeks away since April.
    Not too long now
    Thanks again

    Hi Senna
I have OA and the base of my thumb is really swollen and sometimes very painful, I also have the noduals on my index finger...these dont cause me any pain,
I hope your rheumy can offer some help.
    Love
