Hi everyone.

First post, i have had OA in both hips for past 5 years ( i am 47) but the time has come to change the right one as the pain is to much to bear. So having BHR in a few months so fingers crossed things will be better from now on.

Hello stan794, it's nice to meet you. There are a fair few around here who have had the op you are awaiting, and very successful it has been for them too. The op is can be straightforward, the recovery may take longer than you might think or be told, but it can make all the difference to the quality of your life and I sincerely hope it does. I wish you well, please feel free to post any worries or questions, I am sure that those who have had it done will be all too willing to help if they can. DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi Stan

    good to meet you

Sorry about the hips though and am glad you are having them (or at least one!) sorted out soon.

I have no personal experience of this type of surgery just friends and family who have had it done and none of them have ever looked back.

    Love

    Toni xx

Thank you for your words of support. I have been trying the Margaret Hills diet over the last year but it has made no difference so alas the new hip. Must admit it does worry me though ( i tend to think the worst, what if it goes wrong etc  )

    Hi Stan
And a very warm welcome to this lovely forum, I have OA in both hips...and a couple of other places, I should have had my first hip replaced two years ago...but I was to scared to go ahead.
I really wished I had, because I would be having my second one now, there are quite a few people on here, that really are pleased with there new hips.
So I really do wish you well with op, I had better get my skates on here... or I will never get them done..
    Love
    Barbara

    Hi Stan

    Sorry about your hips :(

I too have had OA in both hips since childhood. I am now 38 and have recently had both my hips replaced, I am now four weeks post op. I can now move my legs and am free of the pain which has plagued me for so many years. I was really scared before my operation and the lovely people on here really helped me through it all. I am still in recovery but already I can walk so much better and move my legs without being close to tears with pain. I hope we can all support you and advise you whenever you need us. Try to think positive. Sending you hugs xx

    Thanks Jean
Did you have a THR or HR. I am down for HR but in two minds about just going for THR. The surgeon recommended HR as i am quite active (well i was lol) and the job i have (electrician)

    Hi Stan

I had THR in both hips in the same op. I was in theatre for over six hours as I had a lot of reconstruction done as well. I was on my feet the following morning and it is amazing how quick the body recovers. The other people in the ward who had a routine THR in one hip were up and about and doing great within a day or two. My recovery is slightly longer but I am hoping to be walking unaided by Christmas. Feel free to ask me any questions and I will be happy to help if I can xx

    Hi Stan

Sorry you are in this particular boat with so many. Good to see Jean has posted here, she is definately making my own looming THR at 51 seem a little less scarey. Am sure others who have been there will help if they can. Just wanted to add my welcome and send support. Keep in touch and take care.

    Hi Stan,

Just wanted to welcome you to the site..
I suffer with my hips but no nothing about hip ops, i see you have already spoke to some of the others who know all about it , so i hope they have eased some of them worries..
Feel free to ask any questions no matter how small they may be, for one who is unfamilar with things can be a very daunting experience..
Look forward to seeing you around..

    Thanks folks

Sorry Jean another question - did you have the option of a HR, i only ask because i have read about a few failures early on (different forum) with these that needed converting to THR. Even though my surgeon is saying HR is best for me i am tending to think about having a THR instead my logic being if HR failures are higher than THR then by having a THR i hopefully only have to go through it all once.

    Hi Stan

I wasnt offered HR but I totally understand what you are saying. THR is so successful and the great results can last for many many years. In my opinion it is better to go for something with good results which will benefit you for a long period of time. I was advised by my surgeon that getting both my hips replaced at the same time would have a good result in the long run although he did say that he would do one at a time if I felt getting both done would be too much for me. Like yourself I saw it as getting one surgery with one recovery etc and decided that it was the best option for me as I want to start enjoying my new life as soon as possible. My surgeon sees no reason why I cant live an active life for many years to come and encourages me to do as much as I feel comfortable with. Why dont you try to get in contact with your surgeon and discuss whether getting a THR might be a better option for you, just tell him exactly how you feel about it. Keep me posted on how things go and what you and your surgeon decide to do xx
    Big Hugs
