My name is Peter Wicks...Pete to my friends,I am the carer to my wife Sylvia who has suffered with RA for over twenty years. Her main medication is Methotrexate and Steroids...but soon after taking the Methotrexate she felt very sick indeed...this went on for many years until one day we were having fried tomatoes on toast, at the same time she was taking her Methotrexate...Guess what! the feeling of sickness stopped completely...that was some eight years ago. With some basic research I isolated the likely chemical in the humble tomatoes that was stopping her sickness which is called Lycopene...which I found you could buy in any good Herbal shop...the most common strength is 10 mg.She takes the Lycopene pill half hour before she has her meal for the day,we have soup on that day..then the main meal then takes her Methotrexate then her sweet(rice pudding)so her Methotrexate is surrounded by food
and for nearly twelve years her sickness has never troubled her.We have told this story to her RA doctor at Addenbrookes Hospital and he seemed intrigued....this really works for her....worth a try yourselves..

    Hi again, Pete

It is good that you have posted on here now. I am sure that those those who suffer from sickness after taking metho might well wish to try this. They have nothing to lose have they?

I have osteo arthritis so not on that drug at all.

All good wishes to you and Sylvia. She must be so grateful to you for serving her fried tomatoes that day and now doesn't suffer from sickness/nausea when taking the metho.

    Look after each other,

    Elna x

Hello, nice to hear from you on the forum. Sounds like something interesting you've discovered. I'm glad your wife finds it so helpful. I have OA, so don't take that drug, although I can't take quite a few things as I've had an ulcer.

I've often worried, if I did get ra and had to take that medication that makes so many people sick, how I'd cope. Nice to now you can find ways. Love Suexx

Hello Peter, it's nice to meet you (and indirectly your wife too!) I hope you are both as well as you can be. I am on injected meth and I have to say that I am fortunate in that nausea is a very rare occurrence for me, but I have come across lycopene as being good for summat else: after much racking of my few brain cells I came to the conclusion it was eyesight - I am sure I remember reading that it can guard against macular degeneration. I think it's present in carrots too (though I am fully prepared to admit that I could be wrong on both fronts!)

Highly acidic foods are often thought to be bad for arthritis sufferers, dairy products too. I know that there are a few on here who restrict their diet and with some good effect. I did suffer from vile nausea after taking alendronic acid, six hours of ugh at a stretch, but found that swigging a full-fat Coke after the required 30 minute sit-up solved that problem! I wish you both well. DD

Thank you all for your kind welcome...so here is a little bio of my working life....

As a retired R&D technician in the world of electro mechanical and semiconductor technology from the worlds first brain scanning machine at EMI in Hayes in Middlesex to Xerography development and crystal pulling technology in the Cambridge Science Parks, I find it second nature to ask the question "why" is it that the skin of the tomatoes when heated up doubles the strength of the chemical Lycopene. The humble tom is now the subject or frantic research, cos the scientists have found a wealth of new chemicals lodged inside this little red chemical factory. Some years ago we told a doctor who was looking for a subject to do his thesis for a PhD about the power of the tom to stop chemotherapy sickness..to our suprise he is now doing his research..the mind boggles.lol..

There are many things yet to be discovered in this world of ours, I have to admit I am no great fan of tomatoes having been severely intolerant of them in my younger years - oh the eczema they caused, it was horrible. Now I can eat them I'm not that bothered. DD
