Hi
At my aqua exercises there is a woman who was due to see the consultant I had seen at my local hospital, who I had not found helpful at all and have since sought a 2nd opinion for my arthrtis in my left knee.
She said that as her knee is affected in the kneecap only, mine is medial, lateral and under kneecap then the solution he offered (kneecap removal) would suit her. He also offered this to me but he didnt tell me how successful this would be, how long it would take to recover, in fact he would not answer any questions about this procedure at all to me. He gave me 6 weeks to think about it which he has done with this lady too but with her he is forthcoming in his information, advice, with me (and I took my dad along to 2nd app too so it wasnt just my opinion) he didnt like the fact I was too young (42 at the time) and a bit overweight (which I have now lost 2 stone)......I have now found out from this lady that the recovery time according to this person is a year and she can expect to be in hospital anything from 1-2 days to about 4...
For her it is the right decision but it puzzles me as to why he was so un co-operative in my case...He made comments also that "I wasnt living as a normal 40+ person, not being active"..Well I swim, gym and walk?
I guess I wont know why this happened and I am happy Im being treated at Wigan as my consultant there said this would have been absolutely the wrong thing for my condition....Oh well...

you must have got him on a bad day or he might have had his hand slapped for not informing people of all the ins and outs whatever the case you are better off with some one you trust valval0

people are odd Elaine!!!! I suppose they all have the ideal patient in mind and this lady fitted the bill whereas for him you didn't.He probably never answered your questions because he knew deep down you would never have the op because it wasn't suitable. It would have been better if he'd let you know that though.
The outcome has been you have now moved on to Wigan and a new consultant and better targeted treatment.
Good luck, I'm still on that plateau!

Hi Val
Id like to think it was a bad day, cant imagine him having his hand slapped as he seemed someone quite set in his ways. I am better off with my new man at wigan, he was straight with me and i appreciated that..

Yes I think in his mind I wasnt what someone my age should be ie fitter, more active and arthritis not as bad. The other lady concerned is a tall lady but she does carry some weight too, she has gone to gym in past but now cant cos of pain in her knee. That was the whole reason I joined this forum cos I didnt know about the removal of kneecap and only found a couple of people who had and for me at my age I want to get back to being fitter and working again and im not so sure kneecap removal would have helped me, think it would have hindered me.
My man at wigan is brill and its a centre of excellence so i should feel quite good about going there....
Re the plateau i was on it for ages in fact it seemed like a never ending merry-go-roundabout...Stick in there, it will pass, promise!! If not I will eat me socks!!! Oooopppss....

Hi
Yeah isnt it and if i hadnt had someone with me on 2nd time then they wouldnt have beleived me but nowt stranger than folk!
Any op is dependent on the person and to a certain extent its luck too as to if its successful but im hopeful it will put me back on track...Wigan is good, just 90 miles from home...Yikes...
Thanks for all the best...:-)
