Cortisone Injection

Self referred myself to our occy health department as having major pain in my shoulder, she reckons that I need a cortisone injection. I haven't got arthritis in this joint, or at least didn't think I had. Now, I work in the NHS who have a 'promoting attendance policy', so when I asked her when this injection would happen she said.............'first available appointment with the man who does these is 9th November' bearing in mind my attendance at work has not been too great and am on a 'trigger D' I asked if there was no way I could get it sooner, she tried the occy health dept to see if anyone there could do it, the woman who can has just left for maternity leave. She has also tried another physio dept at my local hospital, no luck there either. I contacted my Rheumy Nurse who has now managed to fit me in next Friday 21st, she suggested I try my own GP practice to see if they could do it any sooner. The doc who is only one trained to do this had a clinic this morning (I phoned too late) and is not in Mon, Tues next week, more or less told them to stick it as whats another three days worth of pain!
Do folk not realise the urgency when someone like us is in pain, it is like having toothache in the middle of my bone!!! Painkillers are not working, they take the edge of for a wee while and then it's back with a vengence, waking up in middle of night (although take 100mg amytriptiline). Am a crabbit b**** during the day as it is with the pain never mind the lack of sleep.
Sorry for the rant

Hello rallymad, it's nice to hear from you again and I am sorry that you are having a rough time. Pain dullers do only take off the edge, it's finding the right combination to remove a sufficient edge which is the magic trick and can take years of practice! As for the delay, well sadly it's the norm nowadays, isn't it? NHS resources are becoming increasingly limited whilst the number of people requiring its services just keeps increasing. That must be so frustrating for you, I am rapidly learning from folk on here that painful shoulders are in a league of their own. I hope summat can be sorted for you soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi A,
Glad you got it quicker and the attendance at work thing doesn't sound too helpful to you just now. its all wrong though cus you can';t help it.
sadly you don;t need arthritis to make your should er do this..... i don;t know if its frozen maybe? Its the muscles that do this a lot... mine have given me hell for the last 3-4 years and its the body's way of trying to help but its got it wrong
are they talking triggers (they use cortisone for them in the beginning) or are they talking of actually injecting the joint its self?
I have had both and promise you except for an odd feeling as the needle goes in they aren't too bad and they do use a fair old whack of local anesthetic.
we do half decent pocket duties if you need don;t forget. the usefulness of the jabs.. kinda varies depending on how good the person is and if they get it in exactly the right place. good luck though and let us know how you get on please. Cris x0 -
