Hi - I am new hear but havebeen diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the spine and hips. My Dr has been prescribing Glucosomine but has now decided not to do this any long as he writies "there is no proven benefit of Glucosamine for Arthritis".
I wondered what other sufferers think about this - have you found Glucosamine beneficial or is it better to buy it with Chrondriton(?) Any opinions would help before I start buying these things!

Hi Jo. I don't think there has been any firm proof of benefits, but I cannot see it doing any harm, even if it gives a placebo effect surely that is better than nothing..?
I stopped taking them though as I personally gained nothing from them..
I have osteo in my spine and knees and rheumatoid in other joints, mainly hands, wrists and elbows..
I am sure that others will pop along given time and let you know their experiences, I wish you well and welcome to the forum hun.

    Hi
GPs were stopped from prescribing them because there was no real proof.
I tried them and didnt find them much good...
Sorry got OA in hips, spine, neck and ankle......they werent helping me. I was just wasting money.
If you try them and they do you some good....even if it is a placebo effect....why worry.....if it doesnt do any harm go ahead

    Hi,
My GP told me to get some but if they didn't help within a couple of weeks not to bother any more.
From her attitude it seemed to me she didn't expect them to so I just didn't bother getting them.
Maybe they work for some I just don't know but if your GP is a lot more positive than mine was they are maybe worth a try.
They certainly won't do any harm and everyone is diferent.
If they work for you then worth buying.
I really hope they do as anything that helps this nasty is worth a try.

Hello Jo7, it's nice to meet you though I am sorry you have had to find us. Arthritis is not fun, is it? There are things that we can do to help ourselves but I don't think taking glucosamine is one of them. There is no solid evidence that it helps those with OA, I am of the opinion that those who swear by it are the lucky ones who are experiencing just the aches and pains of an aging body but who like to think it's arthritis. Everyone is different however, in how they react to these things. As your doctor has been prescribing it stop it for a while now, and see if things deteriorate: if they do then you will know that it helps you so it may be worth buying your own. Do your research carefully: there are some firms who rip you off and some who are very good.

Exercise is beneficial as you keep the muscles surrounding a joint strong and thus they support the joint better, but if it's in your spine that is not so easy to achieve: is swimming an option for you? Would you be able to manage that with your hips being troubled? I wish you well. DD

I was taking them for about six months or so. I told the physio about it as soon as I saw her and she said that some people seem to get help from them. She said they take about 3 months before you notice any differnce, so not to expect quick results. So I took them regularlly, for 6 months and then I ran out. We live in the middle of knowhere and so I didn't get any more straight away. After a while I noticed that it didn't make any difference so and I didn't bother to buy any more.
I think it could be like lots of medication, something that works for 1 person may not work for another and we don't no why. So if you feel like trying them, they don't cause harm, why not? You may be one of the people that it helps and if you don't try, you'll never know! I knew someone who found they helped her a lot!
    Good luck, love Sue xxx

Thank you all for your replies and information! Very helpful and interesting to hear from you all. I think, as suggested I will finish the ones I had from the Dr next week and then leave it and see how it goes. I have been taking rosehip which I think seems to help! Wish you all well - there seem to be so many of us suffering from this awful problem!
    Good luck and thanks

    Hi Greta...
well if you have already ordered them and paid for them you might as well try them even if they dont do any good....I doubt that they will do you any harm ...although you could ask your GP anyway....but according to others it wont and I took them for quite a while and the only thing was that it didnt do any good and I wasted money  . You might be one of the ones that it helps
    Love

I do take Joint Exlixir containing glucosamine and the choin something (cannot spell it). I buy it on the internet the dosage is 1500 mgs of both + pineapple and mango flavour for a couple of years & Noni and they are not cheap at £16 a bottle. I think they help as although got generalised arthritis and in the knees as well which sometimes flare up, the pain is manageable. In the past I had hip pain on and off but have not been getting any lately. I also taking calcium, omega 3 and mostly vits supplements but not prescribed medication if I can help it. I have read that both the juices I am taking there is no evidence that it is of benefits to arthritis. I am gong to stop the noni and try rosehip. I have noticed wth noni, I do not get cold etc, immune system seems stronger. Thanks

I was told by a knee specialist a few years ago that Glucosamine can help with certain conditions But after a few weeks the effects stop and your body just excretes it I think the period was 6 weeks Ten wait a while and start again
