Help with numb legs......?

Hi All....

This is my first post. I've just found out the problems i've been having are caused by arthritis of the spine due to horse riding injuries from years back. I'm finding it all very scary and hard to deal with..... the most upsetting thing is that i'm suffering really badly with numb legs. As in they are completely dead for hours on end sometimes. I've been told this is quite a common symptom for this kind of arthritis, but that doesnt make it any easier to cope with! When it happens i'm basically stuck wherever I am when it comes on until my body decides to work properly again. I wanted to ask if anyone else has similar problems and how you cope? Are there any tips on how to get myself moving again or anything like that?

Thanks :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. This must be a very scary time for you and I don't think there is anything I can really say. The only thing I would say is when you feel able just walk around, indoors at first to see how you go. This is only what I did but my back was different to yours and it came from my Ortho when he thought I was able. Do you have a appointment with ortho yet, maybe better to ask them as I'm not Medical.
There will be others with arthur to chat soon.
    Love

    Hi Nosierosie

Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to read that you are having spinal problems that are affecting your walking. That sounds very scary, losing the use of your legs to numbness and never quite knowing when this will happen.

Are you able to give us a little more information? Who has given you that diagnosis?

I am nearly three weeks post op from having a spinal op, neck end. My symptoms were/are pins and needles in hands and both legs but mostly the left leg not working properly, sometimes worse than others. I say my symptoms were/are, because I still have them but the op , so I have been told by my surgeon, will stop further damage. There is no guarantee that I will regain better use of the leg or lose the pins and needles sensation in my hands, but it is possible it may improve or get much better, given time. As a result of an MRI it showed that 2 of my vertebrae were touching the spinal cord which was causing my problems.

That is my story. My symptoms came on quite quickly. Did yours?

    Elna x

Hello nosierosie, it's nice to meet you but I am sorry you have had to find us. From the sound of what you have told us I am thinking it's OA that you have? That often results from injury or trauma to joints (it's also known as the wear and tear arthritis) but the numbness sounds more nerve-related to me (but please remember I am not a doc!) I think you need to raise this matter with your GP, they are the best placed to advise you. Please let us know what he says, yes? I have arthritis in most of my lower joints, due to both an auto-immune one and OA and pain is constant but I have never experienced the numbness you describe. Poor you  that must be miserable. Hui Rosie,

thats a scary one when it happens to you and like Elna i wonder who you have seen?

Its could be a few things but someone should be trying to hep and sort it out other than a gp and i hope you have a consultant ordering further tests cus its not good enough to leave you like that.

i don't have it now but i used to lose my legs, especially the let one, and that was oa and an injury to the spine that had curved the cord. it was as if someone had cut my leg or legs off... i had absolutely no feeling in them and well mine was sorted by a decompression and a lot of ot and physio.

some bits stayed for ever but a lot came back and the legs behave fairly well now a days so flower you need someone looking at why this is happening, you really do.

hope you will get some real help and nice to meet you. Cris x

    Hi Rosie

I just wanted to welcome you to the forum. I think if I were you I would go back to your gp and ask to be refered to a specialist.

    Hope you get help soon.
