Osteoporosis and beer.

According to today's Mail on Sunday (in their health section) older women can guard against developing osteoporosis in later life by drinking a daily pint of beer. Apparently ale is a good source of dietary silicone, a cruicial component for building new bones. It is contained within the malt and is more easily absorbed by the body than that contained in some plants and beans.
I for one am determined to do some very thorough research on this, I have been swilling ale for a fair few number of years but now I know there is some 'scientific evidence' - if not a fantastic benefit - well, who am I to argue? Pint of Wherry, anyone? DD

Older than what? Think you're far too young for this, DD. I'll gallantly volunteer to be a guinea pig.
So, it's red wine for my heart, white wine for the free radicals, whisky to protect against cancer and beer for osteoporosis. It's going to be very tough getting through a day's housework after all this healthy eating/drinking but, hey, I'm up for it.
Can I get it all on prescription? I'd be willing to scrap the painkillers. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

You know what Sticky, i reckon we would feel far better with this as our medication, as most of the day we would be sloshed and not even feel the pain...xxTracyxx0 -
Sticky,
Doing the housework? It's going to be difficult to get out of bed!!!
Sorry to put a bit of a downer on this but whiskey is my drink and I've had cancer twice.
Maybe I should of drunk it neat.

Oooooh sticky, I like your thinking! The article did not specify which plants were a good source of that stuff: knowing our luck it's probably raw stinging nettles. Kellerman, your post needs a serious answer but I am out on my feet with tiredness. I am sorry. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Kellerman, DD is a much kinder person than I am. For my money, your post doesn’t necessarily need a serious answer. I love whisky too, it didn’t prevent me from getting cancer either (Just the once, though) but, as you say, maybe we should have drunk it neat. Or, in my case, drunk it neat all the time. Or maybe it’s just single malts that do the job. I can feel a lot more research coming on. Meet you in the pub in ½ hour?If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

The research didn't, apparently, say that beer helped to prevent osteoporosis in men, delboy, only in women. So, I'm afraid you'd have to be rather more of a guinea pig than I suspect you were anticipating. Still want to go through with it?If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

del? You're on. I think we need a number of country-wide focus groups who will, undoubtedly, lose their focus after carrying out some assiduous research in the interests of propping up a bar - sorry, I meant in discovering whether this is a viable prospect. I suspect the article didn't mention men as although they can (and indeed do) contract osteoporosis it is less common than in women.
Kellerman, I still have no idea what to say. I'm sorry. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
