Hi All. Me again. Greetings.

Very recently, I was diagnosed "probable" RA (Whatever the "Probable" means!).

Anyway,I've never been a very good sleeper.
But I've just started taking Hydroxychloroquine and Methotrexate.
I'm also on meds for Asthma & Allergies, & high Blood Pressure.

I'm awake at ridiculous times through the night regularly and wondered if others on the meds for RA have probs since they started taking them.
Or maybe it's just me not being able to sleep?

Would be interested to know others' experiences.

Best wishes all, & take care.

Pal

    Hi Pal,

sorry your having a rough time sleeping and it might be worth talking to your GP if it continues?

is it pain thats waking you or are you just not getting off to sleep? for me its a combination of both just now but the mtx doesn't, thankfully, keep me awake but i am not on the hydroxy so don't know if that can do it.

i have pregabalin and they wired me and keep me awake so partly thats what makes me not sleep but mostly its not being able to get comfortable of the neck and lumber (they like different positions) banging off.

hope you will get some sleep. Cris x

    Hi Skezier

Sorry to hear of your probs with sleeping.

Me - I'm used to insomnia. Just seems worse at the moment.
I don't really want to talk to the Doc about it particularly cos I don't want any more meds! I'm on enough now! lol

I just wake up. Don't think it's the pain doing it although I am aware of the pain when I wake. I just wondered if it's to do with the meds for RA.

    All the best. Take care.

    Hi Pal

I have had sleeping problems for years and years. I have had ra for 23 years and I can't say that it is the meds I am taking that has made my sleep either better or worse. I have been on meth well over 10 years, leflunomide about the same and hydroxy for about 2 years. I think it is the arthritis that is the problem as with stiffness you wake to turn and then sometimes it's hard to drop off again. (especially with a snorer at the side of you  )

Hope you manage to get the one good night every so often. Although if I do, I feel worse the next day

    Hey Pal,

Its not the meds for me. Am no longer on mtx but when i was was fine.
Its the pain and getting comfortable and waking up coz of discomfort that is my prob.

Skezier has been a rock and I will be talking to my G.P this week, do take her advice .

Hope you are able to get some sleep and this passes, lack of sleep is a killer.

    Take care.

I have had problems sleeping for years, it's partly the meds and mostly pain. I recently had a three-week break from humira and meth and it was lovely: I felt so much better in myself and slept beautifully. Now I'm back on them and feel rough and sleep is back to its usual erratic nature - and what I do experience is hardly restful. Never mind, I'm used to it. DD

I used to have big problems due to the pain, being uncomfortable and i think over tired..My rheumy prescribed amitriptyline which is supposed to help relax..I have found they have been a godsend to me, so may be worth mentioning your trouble s;eeping to GP..

I am a RAer , have been for 31 years . It's not the meds that stop me sleeping ; in fact I sleep better since starting humira 2 years ago ; but pain and stiffness causing discomfort . I tend to wake up about 3 in the morning and then lie awake until it's time to get up and start the day ! Jillyb

Thanks everyone for your replies. That's helpful.
I'm nearest to Jillyb in experience. Waking at around 3 am for and then awake for hours. What particularly got to me this a.m. was waking up at 1.45 and not going back off!

    Take care.

I take meth & hydroxy and also use an inhaler & a nasal spray. They've never interfered with my sleep but I do seem to have acquired some good 'sleep genes'. I also never sleep during the day which probably helps.

    Hi Pal,

Sorry to hear about your sleep problems-it's akiller isn't it and just compounds the fatigue issues. Like you I take hydroxychlorquine, with Sulfasalazine. I also use inhalers and nasal spray for asthma and allergies- and like you my sleep is poor- often get off to sleep okay then wake around 3-often tossing and turning for hours-think for me it's a mixture of wheezy chest and sore joints so I struggle to get comfortable-and my beloved snores like an engine for chunks of the night which doesn't help.

Hope that your sleeping improves soon. Take care. Blessings.
