First Cortisone injection

As the title says, having been living with hip and knee pain for years I have just been diagnosed with hip arthritis and am going for a cortisone injection in just over a week.
Can anyone tell me what to expect, how painful it will be, and how long I can expect to be sore for. My Dr. has said I will have local anathsetic and sedation and it will be Xray guided. He has also said I will be sore for the rest of the day but should be fine the next day, is this true or will I need to write off a couple of days?
Thanks in advance.

Hello SusieG, ah, a joint injection - not my favourite thing! I have never had a hip injected, but I have had my knees done on numerous occasions and my right ankle twice. I hope someone is taking you in and driving you home as driving with an anaesthetised joint - never mind the sedation! - is not that good an idea. You will indeed be sore afterwards (it's a different hurt to the arthritis pain) and I strongly recommend that you rest for as long as you can after. My hospital always told me at least 48 hours in bed for the knees, this gives the steroid the chance to 'soak in' and will hopefully aid its effectiveness. I wish you well and I hope it provides the maximum benefit it can. Do let us know how you get on, please. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi susieg
a long long time since I had my knees injected, I do remember having to have complete bed rest, I think mine was 48 hours too (was in hospital though at the time)
Hope the injection helps you as it did help me

Hi Susie,
glad they are trying this cus it can help quite a lot and with luck you will get a good result.
its a bit variable but never had one yet that didn't help to some degree.
how painful....
for me they feel odd rather than painful as they go in. excluding the ones in the spine they do just feel odd. the hip one is a bit sore but you don't feel the full force cus they use a fair old whack of local in the drug as well.
i really hope it will go well and let us know how you get on. oh and if needed we do half decent pocket duties as well. Cris x0 -
Hi, I've had my knee done a couple of times. No soreness at all but it does take a while to work. Good idea to get a lift or a taxi, though I went home on the bus last time!0

Hi Susie
I have had injections via xray direction in my lower back and did not know anything about it. I do not remember having any pain, not the next day. I was so pleased to get rid of the sciatica in my lower back and leg which was instant. This was done on 3 December 2009 (touch wood) and all is well in that department.
I wish you all the best with that and hope it is as successful in your hip as it was for me in my lower spine.

Hi, I have had my hip done. It didn't hurt, just uncomfortable. I had to rest for 24hrs afterward. It did help.
Hope yours goes well.0 -

I've had knees done a long time ago when I had my own. I don't remember it hurting but I do remember that, to give it the best opportunity to work, you should try to give the injected joint as little as possible to do for two days.
(It's amazing that my first one worked. No-one told me that and I walked home afterwards.)If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
