Hi everyone I have'nt been posting for a while but i have been reading your posts . I have been in a lot of pain with OA in my knee .It is driving me mad I can't walk on it any more , I have been brave and arranged to go back to the specialist . I have an appointment on the 27th of this month .
The trouble is I am terrified he will say I need it replaced , I am worrying already. This is all because of the last TKR I had done they did'nt take into account i had been taking strong pain killers and so did'nt give me enough morphine . I woke up in terrible pain after the op, I can't face it again . I spent the time in hospital after the op also in a lot of pain and was told i could'nt have any more pain relief . I did'nt find out until I went back 3 months later that they did'nt know I was on morphine before the op.
I am so fightened it will happen again . I wondered if this had happened to anyone else . I found them very uncaring , when you are in there hands they can do what they want . ....jillyx

Aw poor you Jilly, I can understand how you feel about having an operation but it if is all discussed beforehand and during, this will not happen again. I also suffered a lot of pain in hospital after my first TKR. I did not realise that I should use the morphine pump even when I was not in much pain, due to all the other blocks they had given me. They took the morphine pump away the next morning and then ouch, the pain was relentless. They could not understand why. This was what had happened in the end, so they told me. This did not stop me going in again to have the other knee done and this time there was not that problem - I made sure of that!
Also with the first op the anaesthetist had trouble giving me an epidural, finding the right place or something, and it was not pleasant. The second time around I mentioned this to the anaesthetist and she said don't worry, I can give you the epidural once you are under the GA so you will not feel a thing. .... and that was great.
You cannot put your life on hold like this, Jilly, if you can not put weight on it, you will be putting so much pressure on the other knee.
I hope if the answer is a replacement, that you feel able to go through with it.

I would endorse all that Elna's said, jilly. Just remember, when you go for the pre-med and they're taking notes on your meds, that you need to tell them all that you're on plus dosage. It's important that you tell them everything that's relevant. Don't assume they already know or that someone else will have told them. Best of luck.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi elnafin,Thanks for the advise , I also had trouble with the epidural , I had a THR which they found they could'nt give me a epidural , so they had to give me a general. When i went in the theatre for the TKR I told the anethatist , he took no notice of me and said that he was doing it this time and would get it . He spent ages pushing the needle in and out and sending painful pulses down my legs , in the end he gave up and gave me a general .
I found all that frightening to so if I do have this op I will go mad if it happens again .
Thanks for the advise I will tell them and tell them again if i do have it done .....jillyx0 -
Hi stickywicket , Thanks for your reply . I did tell them about the medication I was on but the pharmacist didnt recognise the name and did'nt alert them to it . But this time I will have it on me when i go down to the theatre if I have it done . thanks again ...jillyx0

HiJilly
I had the GA both times anyway, and also a epidural as a nerve block or something, for when I came round from the op. Wasn't I the lucky one Yes, it was not pleasant when he could not find the right spot to inject - think it was because I had a bony back  I was told to get into the foetal position and the male nurse was pressing down on my head and arms whilst this anaesthetist stabbed away until he found the correct spot. I won't forget that in a hurry, but still went back for another op and told the anaethetist about it and knew nothing about it the second time round.

It is good to talk, Jilly. He did apologise but it does make one fearful, I began to wonder if he actually knew what he was doing.
