    Hi Paul

I understand that this can come on very quickly. Best to see your gp. I think you can have injections but this is only a temporary step to get rid of the pain. I am sorry that you are experiencing this on top of everything else.

I agree paulch, that would seem to be the best thing to do. I hope it has eased today. If you do get to see someone about it do let us know how you get on. DD

Oh no! Mr DD has that in his right big toe and horribly miserable for him it is too. He sorts it with a few days of diclofenac anti-inflammatories, has the GP given you summat similar? I think gout is arthritis-related, and I know from him (and the sight of his toe) how nasty it is: you have my sympathy, paulch, and I hope things ease soon. DD

    Hi Paul
Do you know, as I read your posting yesterday I thought that sounds like gout but as you were not asking I did not mention it. Good that you have had a diagnosis and hopefully the meds will help to ease the horrible pain.

Only thing that works for me is Allourinol , I now take 500mg per day it prevents the attacks , the anti inflams etc only work when you are having one. My Rheumotologist did blood tests to check my uric acid level and once stabalised knew what dosage to give .

Prevention better than cure, the Allopurinol prevents the build up of uric acid crystals that form btwn the toe (or other) joints and cause the pain, obviously alcohol and other foods/drinks cause more uric acid and have to be avoided.

    Oh Paul

this is dreadful for you it being your best foot too

I know how painful this can be and am suprised the doc didnt give you more info on gout. Think it's an idea to avoid more than alcohol.... Stepdaughter's Grandad avoids anything with uric acid l think including fresh orange juice :???:

There is a information on the main A/C site might be worth a look??

Before my hips went (and on painkillers) I was able to drink alcohol socially and consume orange/grapefruit juice providing I took the Allo , as soon as I stopped the Allo my left toe became solid & red and I was in agony, I couldn't even bear a bedsheet over it, I guzzle grapefruit/orange jucie by the gallon now as no alcohol.

As I said if you suffer from this you need to see a rhumatologist who can find the right amount of the drug which will stop the crystals forming, all the anti inflamatories ( naproxin etc) do is what they say on the tin reduce the inflamation once you have it, rather not have it.

When I went to my doctor with this complaint(Hallux rigious big toe pain)
he sent me for tests for Gout...but it turned our to be the Osteoarthritis in both big toes and both thumbs are also affected...don't have the steroid injection..painful and none effective...just learn to live with it..

One of the very common mis-conceptions about gout is that it is linked to a high intake of alcohol: it is not, even tee-totallers can suffer from it. I hope the Nap helps, Paul, but if not do consider having the steroid injection if it is suggested. Steroids are contrary beasts - they give immense relief to some, partial relief to others and no relief to the rest: I alas have always been in that third category but there are a fair few who swear by them and you won't know until you try! Good luck and I hope things are easing for you now. DD
