sorry not to have been around much but hubby was diagnoised with cancer hopefully hes ok now after chemo etc, yesterday I had an appointment for the check of my big toe, I had a plate and screws in my toe in may due to the joint being badly deformed with OA it refused to heal an xr ay showed the plate had snapped so went back in September and had the plate and screws removed, and its taken from then until yesterday for the wound to heal although the toe has never fused my consultant said as long as no pain he is happy to leave it like that which I was fine with, I get aches as usual in damp weather but no pain, he said when I'm ready i should go back for my right ankle and toe to be done, has anyone else been left with an unfused toe ? it really doesnt bother me but wondered how common it is , michelle

I had my big toe partially fused in Sept. He was going to do a total fusion but changed his mind when he'd made the incision. He's fused one joint and transfered a tendon to make the toe easier to walk on. I don't really understand but I totally trust his judgement. I have heard of toe fusion failures and believe that they are tricky things to get right. Good luck and I hope it doesn't cause you too many problems.

I had my 2nd one done as a replacement joint, which failed, the bone never grew around the new ceramic insert, osteoporosis was the cause and now the joint has been removed, I have a space! Its like walking on a permanently broken bone but theres not enough bone left to fuse because it was shortened to accept the new joint. I have heard of hip joints being left out and patients still managing.

hey ho, part of the fun of life! Keep smiling.

    Hi Michelle,
I was wondering how you were getting on with the toe. I am sorry that it has not fused for you but it is good that it has finally healed.
I hope your hubby starts to feel better soon and fingers crossed that things improve all round for you both.

    HI Michelle

Tis WOnky doing PA duty for Cris

Cris says that she did have a toe which didn't fuse (it's the 4th one not the big one) but over time it's knitted together in a fashion. With the Big toe Cris had half the ball joint removed and that too has knitted together quite well.

Hang in there because after a while it will probably knit itself together and the ligaments and tendons should hold it all together fairly well.

    hugs (((()))) and fingers crossed
