Saw my consultant this morning and he wants me to have a double partial knee replacement in Spring 2012.
Has anyone else had one or double?
Many thanks

Hi there
I have had two TKR's done two years apart but no partial knee replacements. A surgeon performed an arthroscopy and I felt there was something left in there post op like a bit of grit because I had such pain. He did the op again but it did not help me for long at all. He offered to do a partial but I had kind of lost faith in him and left it. A couple of years later when I saw another surgeon, he said it was too late for a partial as the knee was shot so I had a total.
One good thing is that with a partial, if you do need a total later on, it is easy for the surgeon to do this or so I have been told.
I wish you the best of luck next spring if you decide to go ahead.

Hello Pink,
I had a bi-compartmental replacement (a partial replacement) to my right knee in May 2009. This was done at the RNOH in Stanmore.
Initially I had problems with bending the knee as the drain had to be in for 2 days. I was out of bed the morning after the operation and walking with crutches from that point on. All I can say is that I feel the partial is "holding" that side of the knee, unfortunately the outer side of my knee is still natural bone and is still eroding. I will need a TKR in the future on both knees. (I have OA in multiple weight bearing joints).
I've had post-op pain and swelling which I still get to this day. However I have a 125 degree bend that side (the unoperated knee was 130 degree bend when measured last). I achieved that bend through bloody hard work with the physio going from 80 degrees to 95 degrees in three weeks.
My scar is a hypertrophic one (I make too much scar tissue when healing) so is very visible, however I know others who have had replacements and you can barely see the scar - I was unlucky.
Be ready for the physio afterwards, and prepare as much as you can before hand. It's preparation, preparation and preparation. Follow the instructions/guidance you're given by the medical people to the letter - it'll pay off in the end.
Please PM if you need any further information - I'd be more than happy to help.
Good luck and let us know your date.
