Hi all,

I've just been put on a trial of Nortripyline on the advice of my rheumy and doctor, for nerve pain, to ease the burning sensations around my ankles amongst other things. Actually amitriptyline was originally suggested, but the doc felt Nortripyline offered fewer side effects.

I've been prescribed a 10mg dose. I've read some of the blurb about the drug, and I'm a little concerned as I'm on one of the drugs (terbinafine - for nasty toe nails ... lol) that clashes with it (for a non arthritic complaint) which is requiring monthly liver function tests. I should come off this drug in about six months I hope.

So I would appreciate hearing experiences anyone has had of Nortripyline.

Have a great pain free weekend.
Scozzie

PS I've also been kept on trammies, which are making a difference, but are still only pain dullers.

    Hi Scozzie

my step-daughter had that stuff for her toenails and once it worked it was pretty quick. Months yes but not 6. Me? l would check with pharmacist that it is ok to take both though hopefully your doc has already decided it is

Glad the tramadol still a good pain killer for you.

There are one or two on here who take nortyrp instead of amatrip - never been sure what the difference is though.

    Love

Hi me dear well I take 25mg tabs for my neck spondulosis and I can honestly say it works really well much better than any analgesics, I take 2 in the morning but if it gets painful I'll top off with another one or two, they work much better than the Gabapentin I had for the neuropathic pain and general pain from the OA in my knees?, never figured that one out?, however I do get slight side effects with them but they are mild and don't bother me much unlike Gabapentin Pregabalin I reacted badly to those things seeing PC'screens melt Matrix style is far to trippy even for me!.
Right back to Nortrip, they were design'd for depression but were found out to help pain as a side effect, there are 16 types of tricyclid's (that's what they call this group of drugs) so if one doesn't work or suit you, you can simply try another one as they all work different, they arn't addictive like Tramadol or other opioid are and have very few side effects, that's not to say they don't have any though, also if you are taking a high dose and want or need to come off them for any reason I think you need to reduce the levels over time as stopping them outright can cause problems but that's only on a really high dose,.
so give em a go you have nothing to loose just give them 3 or 4 days to kick in and don't worry they can work really really well

    Thanks Mel, Toni and Barbara

Mel, your advice was pretty concise and what I was looking for. I spoke to the pharmacist this morning, and looked it up to see what it said - which is basically that the Terbinafine may make the Nortripyline more effective in treating neurological pain.

Hopefully, Nortripyline's drowsiness side effect will counterbalance and trammies' wakefulness that I seem to be suffering at night at the moment (I get to sleep easy enough, but I've been waking around 3 or 4 and not getting back to sleep ... and not feeling the effects of that at work).

    Cheers and thanks again
    Scozzie

PS I've been on the terbinafine for months now and the fungal infection is only about half grown out my nails, but they are looking better.

Glad I could help!, oh one thing I forgot is dreams, it might make your dreams a bit vivid for bit, by heck some of mine were great, like 3D they were really enjoyable and nothing nasty, they always mixed up what had gone on that day with what I was dreaming about.
