Hi,
Firstly let me say that I know we aren't doctors. Only a few people have medical knowledge.
I also know that medication works differently for different people.
Some people tolerate some things, others dont. Some it works for others it doesnt.
All I want is opinions. Thanks.
Briefly....I have arthritis in my hips, spine, neck and ankle. Have had one THR which wasnt really successful. Also got kypho scoliosis.
I'm on paracetamol, and naproxen slow release. I was on MST for a short time because of a fractured pelvis......I've been off that for a few weeks and dont want to go back on it. I'm sorer recently than I have been for a while.
I mentioned this to the GP {who had taken me of diclofenic and put me on naproxen instead ...last May} She had said she would send me to a pain clinic but when mentioned that my pain was worse her answer to my extra pain is ........in the New year.....to take me of naproxen and put me on codeine instead. I dont know because I havent tried it yet but to me 2 lots of analgesics and no anti inflamm :?: :?: :?: . cant see that helping my pain :???: :???: . I would appreciate others opinions.
Love
Hileena

Hi, at one point I was on naproxen and co codamols along with a load of other meds. It sounds as though your doc may be flummoxed?? You can push for the pain clinic referral. There are so many options for pain relief, that you shouldn't have to suffer unnecessarily. I can no longer take nsaids due to kidney function, is that why your doc is taking you off them maybe??

Codeine causes you to get 'bunged up' so make sure you keep hydrated and plenty of fruit!!!

Hi Thanks Val. Yes it is time I got that pain map out if I can remember where it is
Suzy......I've just come off 3 months of iron tablets and morphine so I know all about bunged up  I find prune juice is as good as anything.
Well I'm only on paracetamol and naproxen and she thinks the naproxen should be replaced by codeine {in the new year} she bounced this on me at the end of the appt so didnt really get a chance to think about

    Hi Hileena
Im on diclos and cocodamols...30/500..the cocodamols do make me sickly and not quite with it, so I split them in half so that is 15 codeine and 250 paracetamol...and I take half a 500 paracetamol with it, it would be easier if you could get 15/500 but I dont think you can...anyway they work for me
Have i confused you now....im good at that...hope you get some relief very soon.

Oh Barbara Don't know if Hileena is confused but I am!!!!!
The only bit I understand is you break them in half....so are you taking paracetamol and co-codamol as well.
From what I understand from Hileena the doc wants to stop her Naproxen and just give her codeine.
So basically just a pain duller and no anti inflams.
I take co-codamol and naproxen.Different type of meds.
I do break my cocos in half, not because I can't swallow them, but I try half first and if the pain persists I take the other half.
I can't understand how an anti inflam being stopped and a pain duller prescribed instead is going to help.Yes its a stronger pain duller, maybe thats what her doc is thinking.
Like I've said...wait until the new year....maybe she just wasn't thinking straight. May

    Yes Kellerman

    pain killer no anti-inflams.

Is naproxen one of those which is not a good idea long term??

if so could you ask for another one? Most of us have both :???: maybe back to the diclos and codeine????

Hang on  any of this due to the stomach issues Hileena????

In your place l would def be asking for pain clinic referral.

    Love and hugs

    Toni xx

    Hi
Like I said to May in a pm it was bounced on me at the end of an appointment.....and what she does when your 10 mins is up and she thinks thats enough she goes over to the door and puts her and on the handle as if to open it and say goodbye.
I was finished by then.....she had given me a repeat prescription for naproxen and paracetamol so it wasnt important that I question it then....but to be honest I didnt really think it through until I was driving home
No Toni, I dont think any of it is due to stomach issues....she has accepted that I'm more or less signed of from the gallbladder doc.....just one check in 4 months time. She only wants me to see ....(remember the generalist ) .......him some time so he can finalise the the fracture bit of it.....although it feels fine.
    Yes I think I will ask for a pain clinic referral even if she doesnt think they are much good {not exactly her words but more or less}

Maybe Naproxen shouldn't be taken long term.
I can't find my leaflet, but depends what is classed as long term.
There are loads of alternatives which she could prescribe.

Just pain dullers and no anti-inflams seems a bit drastic.
Like I've said Hileena just wait until the New year.
Docs aren't too keen to refer you to a pain clinic....it sort of takes away thier power.

It's something you have to really push for.You need to do this, you know you can. After all you've had to push for everything else.

    Morning All
Hope everyone is well {ish}
Well i still dont follow the GP's thinking but I will make an appt soon
    to discuss pain clinics and meds with her. I'm not going to have a miserable Christmas if I can do something about it ...{to relieve the pain or let me have a decent nights sleep not wakened by pain :| }

    Hello Hileena

I could be completely wrong here but my understanding is that docs have now woken up to the fact that the Diclo, Naproxen and the other NSAIDS are not a good idea long term and I'm sure I read somewhere that the NICE guideline for RA state that painkillers are the preferred option now for long term use, rather than pred and/or anti-inflamms. I know you don't have RA but I guess the same applies. Even so, I don't think it's fair for the doc just to announce that she is swapping you over, without any explanation, or any mention of pain clinic referral.

Also, just wanted to say to those who are splitting co-cos to minimise sickiness that, I don't know if you have ever been offered codeine 30mg separately? I ask for mine like that so I can mix and match with the paracetamol as needed. Just a thought.

Thinking of you Hileena and hoping you can get the pain clinic appt sorted.

    Love Tillyxxx

    Hi Tracy

    Thanks for the note

    Hi Tilly

You are probably right......she basically said when I asked why she had changed me from diclo to naproxen that they were the best of a bad lot  Not as hard on your heart as diclo.
Well we'll see what she has to say when I get round to making an appt  and I will push for the pain clinic....cant do any harm even if it doesnt do any good

Surely nap should be taken with a stomach protector? I don't think you've mentioned that hileena, but I am sitting under a cloud of morning brain fog. OA is a different beast to the others and I think the pain clinic is a good idea, I really do. There is only so much that pain relief can achieve and it can take some tweaking to find out what works the best but by heck, girl, you've been there and tried them over the past couple of years, haven't you? I suppose that co-cos are two lots of dullers in one go, so it's not that an unusual idea and if the anti-inflammatories helped then request to go back on one. This is your HEALTH, your BODY, your LIFE, not hers, and your taxes have paid for the meds you need to help. DD

    Hi DD
Sorry yes I'm on omneprazol......didnt mention that cause I didnt think it had anything to do with the pain.
I didnt mentioned eplipsey tablets either because i didnt think that was relevant
The only reason I was put on omneprazol or lanpro {whatever LOL} was my previous doc put me on diclo full dose slow release.....and I remembered hearing from this forum about stomach protectors....I asked him....and he said Oh well I suppose if you want them!!!!! I dont want to take any more than i need to but I thought this was necessary...he didnt but gave me them anyway.....silly man.
She hasnt actually taken me off the nap yet but as we discussed before prescriptions are only for 28 days now...so she might the next time....but I will be more prepared for her saying that.
The reason I was put on diclo was that seemed to be the only thing that stopped me waking in pain about 5 times a night after my THR {this was after my 6 weeks of sleeping on my back} and it worked for that.
As soon as I joined this surgery she promptly took me off them and put me on nap instead......I questioned it :lol: I can hear you saying NEVER ???? you??? question a doc???:lol::lol: Her answer was they are not as hard on your heart as diclos.
I have refused things physios have organised and they said but your GP said....and I've told them its my body not my GP's and I dont want that particular treatment.....so I will argue my case
    Anyway....how are things with you?
    Love
    Hileena
