Folic Acid Question

Hi Everyone,

Do you only have to take folic acid once a week or can you it as and when you need it?

At the moment I only take it once a week after taking Meth, but I've been a bit yucky during the week, so was wondering if I can take it then too?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I was told to take my folic tab 2 days after taking methotrexate. Hope this helps.

I think you need to talk to the rheumatology nurse about increasing it, I don't think you can decide that for yourself. Some take FA more often than once a week, but under guidance. I hope the yuk passes soon, it's not a nice feeling. DD

Hi,

I take folic acid daily except for meth day which is Sunday for me. My GP spoke to Rhuemmy before changing it. The main reason for me was my liver function thingy was too high.

You should check with Rhummy

Hi

I take folic acid 5mg daily except for mtx day.
I used to only take it once a week, but a different rhummy said every day.
It differs from one gp to another.

I take 1x 5mg folic acid 24 hrs after my MTX (12.5mg),both once a week.Guess only low dose weekly because (touch wood) bloods for liver and kidney function come back ok.

This question comes up quite often on the forum and it always surprises me that there is so much variation in what the docs prescribe. The only consistency seems to be that you never take folic acid on the same day as the meth. I started on one 5mg tab each week, several days (can't remember how many) after the but the rheumatology nurse put it up to 6 days a week when I told her how yukky I was feeling.

As the others have said though, it's not something you should increase yourself and you need to check with the rheumatology nurse.

Do talk to your rheumy. I was on 1 tablet a week, 2 days before MTX day. My new rheumy increased me to 6 days a week which eased the side effects so much. Like tilly said, it surprises me regarding the differing opinions of doctors.

You must talk to your consultant, in fact telephone your helpline to get the information early.
I take mine daily except the day of the methotrexate, But as I have already said ones meds can be entirely different to someone elses.
You never said how much M you take, it would be interesting.
