Hi Guys & Girls, As I mentioned I went to see my G.P last Friday and went in to see her regarding some medication that needed increasing, while I was there I mentioned the pain I had been getting in my thumb (because I had been told to do it by friends!) so she had a feel and said well your hands and thumbs are very inflamed and sore, I'm afraid your Osteoporosis has started in both your hands and you are going to have to use wrist, hand and thumb supports from now on. All I could think was another part buggered! But the best thing that blew me away was when she passed me my pescriptions she said I'm afraid you have to buy the wrist and hand supports because we don't do them on the NHS anymore! So I've had to buy my own, oh well what a Christmas present! x:roll:

The occupational therapy department at my local hospital supplied my wrist supports - is this an option for you??

My splints used to be supplied by the OT department - they were moulded to my hands specifically - I wonder if you asked for those sort they might be done free of charge???

Though re-reading your post I gather you've already bought them. x:oops:

Hope they help with the pain.

    Luv,
    Love, Legs x

It's a shame you couldn't get splints from OT would have saved you some pennies..
At least you now know what you are dealing with and can take each day as it comes..
Hope you get some support from the splints and that you feel better soon..
    Take care, speak soon..xx

Hi Amanda, that seems bizre your doc saying this. Why on earth didnt he refer you to an OT for assesment and to get supports properly made for you.
I got mine from an OT referal and they shape all stuff so it fits properly. I hope yours fit well for you. I dont have experience of off the shelf ones but i would be carefull and ask for a referal if i was you.
    Take care.

    hi Amanda,

first i am sorry you had bad news and hope its hasn't knocked you too hard.

the splint thing... like the others i got mine from ot..... could you get a referral to them cus it might really help an also they would give you the right type.

if you do buy some be careful to make sure they are the right sort but really it should be provided by the ot's

leaving tea and a chew stick for bubba and a hug. Cris x

Thank you all for the heads up on getting refferal to OT, My G.P's secretary is getting it put through for me. So it will now be after Christmas but at least I've got the splints my OH got me to use for now. It's shocking how much they are to buy, that's why when my G.P said they aren't supplied free anymore I was shocked and because they where needed we just went along and brought them and you don't get change out of £25 each!

Glad you have something sorted now.
My GP sends me to the plaster room at our local hospital. I suspect that's because they then come from the hospital budget not the GP's. Its all money money these days. The chemist asked me for a chat re my medication. They are obliged to do this by the powers that be. It was a bit like a quiz....you are taking these because??? Think I did ok (I do understand all the meds) as in the end the lady asked me if I would like a job there :)

Good luck with the OT. Mine was great, and like other posters, moulded some splints to my hands - they are fantastic. Hope you get an appointment soon
