Ultrasound

Hello,

I had an ultrasound appt. today at the hospital. The consultant was extremely unpleasant. He done both hands as asked by my rheumy consultant but he then said he wouldn't do my ankles. My rheumy had down 'symptomatic pain' in ankles so he said he wouldn't do the scan! I had to plead with him to do it, explaining how sore they were. He did it, although he was very offhand-and silent!!

This is my question. I've had ultrasounds before, obviously when I was pregnant and one done on my neck. At each scan, I was talked through things. This guy never said a word but he did take pictures. Am I to assume that's because he's 'seen' something? I find it frustrating that I now have to wait 4wks to be told results!

Thanks,

Magenta x

    Hi,
You are assuming he saw something....I would just think he was ignorant.
He sounds a thoroughly unpleasant man and because he didn't want to do your ankles he sounds like he just didn't want to talk.
Have a lovely Christmas and try not to worry....maybe he had a hangover.

What a shame. He has obviously never suffered from a painful debilitating illness or he would have more sympathy.

I think he has to take pictures whether he has seen anything unusual or not but he could have at least given you a clue.

When I had my ultrasound done the lady who did it was great, she said she could see lots of inflamation and said no wonder I was in so much pain. Strangely, I found that very reasuring as I felt that I had finaly proved my case after suffering in pain for many months.

I hope your follow up appointment goes better for you and you get the answers you need.

    Good luck Petals

    Hi Magenta,

Apart from baby scans I had one on my knee to check for a Bakers cyst which my Rheumy did there and then. He told me straight away that my swelling was caused by an inflamed tendon.

I wouldn't worry that he's found something. As your Rheumy sent you there for the scan it's probably protocol that he has to send any results back to your Rheumy and isn't 'allowed' to comment either way.

I'm annoyed he was so rude to you and if it were me I would complain to PALs. He shouldn't be allowed to behave like that to patients, its unprofessional and offensive.

He didnt' talk as he was a rude man and perhaps not too good at doing that job. I feel that those who do scans should not really offer advice as to what may or not be going on, unless what they see is blatantly obvious but that is just a personal preference. This is also a tricky time of year for getting things through the system as the hiatus of Xmas and New Year beckons. You've had the scans Magenta, so that is a good thing and I hope you can put the possible outcome to the back of your mind and enjoy the festive season. DD

    Hi Eileen

l tend to agree that he didn't talk because he was in a bit of a mood.

Having said that l also thought it was protocol not to 'diagnose' as they are not qualified to. I think the interpretation of the data might come to you via the rheumy or your GP whoever hears first.

You take care and don't let it upset you

    At least it's done now.

    Love

I've had mixed responses to ultrasound. The first time the consultant who was doing it wouldn't scan some joints as he said it was obvious I had RA. This before I was diagnosed - so he was right but it was still a shock to hear it.

Then he did a very good injection for my shoulder under ultrasound which sorted it - til now.

At a later date he scanned my wrists as requested and, even though they were visibly swollen and painful, told me there was no inflammation and that I was in remission! I am so not. When I told my rheumy nurse she replied that is why they liked to get their own rheumatology staff to do the scans, not the general ultrasound dept.
You are best off waiting for the official results from your doctor from the sound of it!
