just got news on and it says people who are house bound need to take vit d supliment as lack of sun can cause artheritis depression and many other things so when you go out do not cover your self in sun cream straight away give your body time to absorb the vit d you need do not burn but do not block all the sun we do need it and can only get small amounts from food val

I munch a calcium pill or two every day that has added vits.D and K. I know that protecting yourself from the strongest rays of the sun is essential but some sunlight is also essential for general all-round good health. It's a good remionder - thank you valval. DD

That's one of the reasons why I like to go out for a walk - taking the wheelchair - although I'm never sure how much Vit D there is about when sun is limited. I do eat a lot of oily fish though. A timely reminder, Val. Thanks.

    Hi Val,

Yo can't beat the sun but its not been around much the last 2 yras this way.... I got the armchair between 2 windows so if it does come out and I am in the chair (even alseep  ) I get a full hit of sun for as long as it is out

Vit D is important and cus I don't eat fish (or meat) that way I don't get so have had it as supplements for many years now.

Hows the sad light working Val? Hope things are ok with you. Cris xx

Well said , Val , we like to sit on the prom with a cup of tea most days as apart from needing the rays ; I go stir crazy if I miss watching the brighton waves . Not sure how much sunshine I absorb through my many , many layers of jumpers , hats and scarves though ! Jillyb

I had Vit D deficiency and have recently found it is one of the most important vitamins for your body. Deficiency is particularly high among dark skinned people living in the UK.

It is also necessary supplement for most people in the winter months.

My consultant suggested a weekly high dose or injection but my GP has so far kept me at the over the counter level which I have to take 3 times a day for any effect. Will get blood tests done later this month and find out if I've increased my levels. Though I'm not aching as much so it is helping.

Totally agree Val, I am dairy free (health reasons), coeliac and veggie, and my calcium levels are low. The hospital gave me a calcium / vitamin D supplement to take daily. Huge thing like a horse tablet! They changed it to something marginally easier to swallow when I said how vile it was.

Calcichew, I know it's available in pharmacies and on prescription.

Hospital prescribed me calcium and Vit D pills-but they taste so bad I couldn't swallow them, so GP has swapped to a dissolvable, lemon flavoured one that's quite pleasant. Don't know if they help but atleast it feels like I'm trying to do something useful!

    Thanks Val for the info.
I am like DD and take calcium and vit D twice a day.
There was an article in one of the newspapers not long ago saying 80% of people in the country do not have enough and as its needed for your bone health its a good idea to get a supplement.
It's recomended you get 10 minutes in the sun without sunscreen daily...this is stored in the liver.Of course we don't get enough sun in this country so the only other way is oily fish and some nuts have it in I believe.
I am going to see if I can find the article.I have OP so get mine on script from my GP.
Salmon is apparently the best fish to eat.
Thanks again Val...this isn't something that is common knowledge and is important for all of us...May

    Hi,

I have vit D deficiency (I have near undetectable levels apparently). I got a blood test done in March 2011 but never found this out till the September! One Gp said I should just eat more cereal and get out in the sun more-both of which I do. Anyway, I developed severe hip pain in April and my new rheumy said it was probably due to my low vit D. I was told to buy tablets from a health food shop and they had to be 25microgram tabs. A very well known chemist has them in their '3 for 2' offers.
