Dog walking & walking aids

HI again (seem to be on a roll tonight starting threads  )

was wondering if any of you walk a dog whilst using two walking aids? I can't manage with just the one walking pole that I have been using, & shortly take delivery of some crutches.

I know it's not an ideal arrangement to be contemplating, but littlelegs has her needs, and until a friend comes back from holiday I have no real alternative other than to walk her myself during the day (Mr W being absent for 12 hours earning pennies for me to spend  )

so ..... any suggestions? She can't be let off her lead in public, so that's not an option I'm afraid.

thanks again
Wonky xx

    Hi Wonky,

you know I been thinking about this and cus she is so well behaved.... I wonder if you could put the lead on a clip on your waist band? She doesn't pull much and she is a very well behaved little girl....

You wouldn;t do that with mine though, who knows where you could end up :lol: Well you know that

Don't forget you can also get those elasticated leads to absorb the shock of a lunge..... I have it as an anti wishbone device and it does work if Haz is being a 'little' unreasonable on his late night meanders.... you know the unscheduled fox-hunting thing he seems to try here and there

What you shouldn't do really is hold the lead in your hand cus if she does lunge the crutch is going to slip..... A mate of mine ties her lead round the crutch but her dog is much better behaved.. and yet I still wouldn;t do that.....

I have tide Haz to my waist, my leg and round my ankle..... only with the elasticated end lead mind and only after he has been run out..... I know how lucky I am with the fields right outside the door and wish I could think of a way to do it that's totally safe for you.... she is well behaved though and that would make looping her through a clip on your waist band kind of feasableish...... I have done it with him and he didn't pull me far.....

Sorry still arguing with the spell check....

Love, slurps, hugs and an elasticated ended lead Cris xxx

    Hi Wonky,

A fiend of mine has also been thinking about this .... we are a bit concerned though and initially could you get your OH to walk with you so you have someone there as you and LL get used to the crutches?

Its lunging that worries me..... I used the whole lead around my middle with Haz ( and I wonder why I feel cut in half  ) cus his lunge is really strong but I know LL is much better behaved. What dog isn't

Please just initially have your OH or someone with you while you get used to it. LL might need to get used to it as well.

I will keep thinking my friend

love and more slurps cus they are disgusting and Slurp's has a special bucket of slobber you may not want  Cris again xxx

Did you mange to confiscate either the thermonator or the gloves? Oh and don't forget Miss L legs has some string, a torch and some scissors as well as other things in her box  ... I think we need to get the key..........

    Hi Wonky
I'm not going to be a lot of help her except to say be careful.
Def. you need one of those expanding leads so that if she pulls it doesnt pull you over as easily.
The only thing I've seen is a lady who has a scooter and walks her dog everyday.....she ties him onto the scooter hadle.
Try googling.....if you havent already

    Gosh Wonky!!!

Sounds a bit of a worry....l can see why you are seeing if anyone else has succeeded with this issue.

I like Cris' idea about clipping her on to your waist if she is not a 'puller', but 100% agree you have to try it out with Longlegs in tow first for safety reasons.

Like Hileena l know a lady who 'walks' hers on her scooter.

    Hi Wonky,
I have a little Bichon Frise.Mine walks slower than me...sniffs around.
I clip her to my waist as I'm unable to use my hands.
I'd try a short...really short try and see how you go but please be careful....they can be pretty unpredictable...no matter how well behaved she is.
Some-one may have different ideas just take care. May

I have two gorgous dogs a yellow lab Sasha and a wee miniture jack russell Jock. My poor OH has to walk them. I was thinking of buying a treadmill to walk them if you have ever seen the dog whisperer he suggests this to tire out hyperactive dogs? Last time I walked my dogs alone I was knocked down and dragged through a hedge by my mad lab cos she heard my neighbour speak and wanted to say hello!!!!! Unfortunately I was still holding poor wee jock and he was dragged too!!!! I was lucky that time it was only a hedge so since then they only get walked by my hubby.

    Thanks everyone

I'm giving things a lot of thought .... and will ponder various options tomorrow when we go out - as I may need to take two walking sticks as my heels are so sore I can barely put them on the ground let alone walk on them.

If all else fails littlelegs will have to have a run on the small field next door to us. She'll put up with that for one morning, but not every day!!

I'll also have a chat with the pet shop people, as they are really good at helping us to adapt things to what will work.

    hugs to you all

    Hi Wonky,

When I see the ot's next week for the contraption I gong to ask them about gel things that go round your heel as well as under it and wondered if a) they exist  b) if I can have some.....

if they do exist maybe they would help you as well?

Don't forget to look out for the elasticated leads.... Haz's one is slightly longer than a normal one but the handle has this consecrated (the spell check did that  i mean it scrunches up on its self but left it cus I thought it was funny  I am sorry and hope it doesn't cause any offence but it was the spell check!) anyway back to this scrunched up bit....

When he lurches he does it with all 4 paws as you know having been hit by them.... the lead stretches out a good 18 inch's extra and absorbs that pull.

They are a good idea for the likes of him and might be a good idea even though Miss L Legs would never dream of behaving so badly.

Hopefully there is something made to help and the pet shop will know what it is.

You still make shure Long Legs is with you for the first few times. Slurps and more slobber which at this time of day might not be just from Slurps  and a cuppa. Love Cris xxx

    Hi Wonky,

If you do manage to find a good solution let me know..
I have 3 staffys and loved going for long walks with them, due to the size and the strength of them i am no longer able to walk them , so it is left to my OH..
I am looking to see if there is someone local who is able to do it for a few pennys, a big strong lad would be ideal, is there anyone by you??

I have a friend who has said he will gladly take her out for walks when I need him to - tho if it was to be a more permanent arrangement he might not be so keen  - but he's away for a couple of weeks. I won't use the dog walking services that pick them up in a van and put them in a cage - she would hate that and it's not worth the worry to either of us!

I can't imagine trying to walk 3 staffies at once  but I find with Littlelegs that the halti collar does help to lessen the pulling/jumping. My main worry would be if she saw food on the ground (I'd be on the ground trailing behind her  ) or another dog ..... Cris can attest to her not being so keen on other dogs (we have the dogs with scars to prove it  ) and I might be taken for a cat chase ....... but she is very understanding so maybe nothing is impossible.

I have a luggage strap with quick release buckles which I could use as a 'belt', and think tonight we might try a little walk with her fixed lead threaded onto the belt. She has been into town a few times wiht that lead tied to my shopping trolley or wheelchair, so that won't be so strange for her.

I'll let you know, and will also look at the pets at home website, as Mr Wonky passes their shop on his way home ..... but will find the details first or I may end up with something that doesn't suit :lol:

thanks again and I'll let you all know how we get along.

Try using a collar called a canny collar it fit's like a halter but also a collar. I have a Siberian Husky and a Alaskan Malamute and it works wonders with the husky on a normal collar she just races all time as soon as I but a canny collar on she walks like a angel. I also walk with a cruch. and my legs are very weak.

By jove I think I may have cracked it

visited the local pet shop (we're regulars there and he's used to me asking for things he's never heard of  ) and asked him if he knew of anything.

he suggested looking at sites aimed at runners who ran with their dogs.

Sure enough I did a bit of internet searching, and found several different kinds of 'hands free' leads (mostly termed leashes as they seem mostly to be made by american firms).

THere are simple ones, and ones that have various features, but there is also something called a 'freeleash hands-free dog leash' which has a waist band with a swivel clip attached to it, and with some elasticated element to the lead, which absorbs some of the pull should the dog lurch away.

the added bonus to me is that the particular one I looked at has a water bottle holder, and a small pouch which will be ideal for my mobile and a few dog bags.

If you put the name into a search engine you'll come across it within the first few entries, but if anyone wants to know exactly what I'm looking to buy I'll gladly PM you the link.

I'm going to look into ordering one tomorrow, so will let you know how we get on.

hugs from a very happy Wonky xxxxx

    Hi Wonky,

Really glad you found something and would love the link at some point as well cus it would be interesting.

I hope you can get it and Haz keeps hitting the key bored.... I think he is trying to endorse his scrunched up lead... they really do take some of the yank out of the lurches.... and he is like walking a tornado if he is that frame of mind.....

Still make sure you have long legs with you though for the first couple of time.....

Will be really interested in what it looks like and how she and you get on with it. Slurps, ((((( ))))) and tea Cris xxx

I take it all back about Royal Mail  :lol::lol:

I ordered it Sunday evening, received it Tuesday morning!

AM very impressed with the construction and the anti-shock elastic bungee on the lead and the elasticated belt. Seems very strong and also comfy.

Won't be trying it until hubby can accompany me on first few walks.

    will let you know
