Just about to have a sutalar fusion op and nowhere on the internet can i find out what the pain will be like immediately post op, i.e. when coming round from the anaesthetic. Can someone who's had the op please tell me - be honest - i want to know and be mentally prepared. Thankyou in advance.

Hi Hiccup
Not had this op but just wanted to wish you well. I'm sure someone will be along soon to give you the info you need. x Dee x0 -
Hi Hiccup,
Sorry can't help but wanted to wish you well. Also to say let us know how it goes. I especially would like to know as I have an artificial ankle which is great I've had it 10 years now and I had no pain after the op at all. I had a steriod injection under anesthetic into my sub talar for pain at the end of Nov so am interested in how you get on as I may have to have it done at some point.
Although I am happy to say injection still keeping pain away.
Good luck,

Everyone is different in how they are affected and in how well they tolerate pain, so I don't think anyone can warn you about how things will turn out. I have had a number of ops and the waking up/post op pain was different for all of them, even the op that was repeated. You will be in the right place to ask for greater pain relief if it is needed so I hope all goes well and you feel the benefits sooner rather than later. Good luck! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Many thanks for your kind wishes deedeeitsme and tiggernut. I will let you know how it goes. Tiggernut - you're lucky your steroid injection seems to be keeping the pain at bay. I had my subtalar injected last year and i had three weeks of absolute bliss and then the pain came back. Hope yours continues to work though. Thanks again both.0

Hi Hiccup,
I had a triple fusion in Sept and one of the joints fused was the sub talor. I can honestly say the pain has been minimal. I woke from the anaesthetic feeling slighly queasy but thats all. They injected my leg with a nerve block when they did the anaesthetic so it was completely numb for the first few days anyway.
I was offered Oramorph (liquid morphine), but declined as I've had it it the past and it knocked me for six, so was given Oxycontin twice a day for the first couple of days along with Tramadol, I only took one Tramadol rather than the Two offered.
Went home 4 days after the op with some co-codamol & only need to take one or 2 throughout the day but 2 at night time.
I was non-weight bearing for a total of 10 weeks but you may be able to weight bear sooner as its just the one joint you're having done.
The worst pain for me has been in the knee on the opposite side which had to take all the weight! I'm currently waiting physio to sort it out!
Please try not to worry, I promise you it won't be as bad as think and the benefis far outweigh abit of discomfort. xx0 -
Thanks so much Lupin25. You've certainly made me feel a little less nervous. Hope you get your knee sorted out soon! :P0

Hi Hicup,
Welcome to the forums.
What will the pain be like.... I haven't had that but have had a lot of foot surgery and there is no doubt about it feet hurt....
They know that though and its kinda taken care of by (in my case pethidine) injections for a few hours after.
When I had both the ankle pinned and the feet operated on I pretty much floated for 72 hours and only got survere pain when I was stupid enough to try and move the operated bits  Bit silly to try that really
I really have to say though the foot and toes were fused and it helped so much and still does even though some of it was done 33 years ago. hang in there and let us know when your having it done cus we do do half decent pocket duties. Nice to meet you. Cris x0 -
Thanks Chris - will keep you informed.0

Hi Hiccup
Welcome to the forum.
Missed your posting.Haven't had a subtalar fusion, but did have ankle replacement in June this year. They gave me a nerve block post op,so foot was slightly numb for a day or two.Had liquid morphine that first night and codeine and paracetamol for a few days and that was it.Pain was minimal.Went home next day!
In plaster for 6 weeks and brace for 2 weeks, could then weight bear.
But pain was no problem, just be sensible!

Thanks for your reply Ron. From replies on here it sounds as if a temporary nerve block is the norm so that's a relief! Phew!0
