I've just read a report in the MoS health section about research in Bonn where those with OA of the knee were treated either with leeching or a placebo of a TENS-type treatment. The study showed that the leeches produced an improvement of more than 30% in symptoms, which is probably due to their saliva as that contains a large number of various analgesic, anaesthetic and histamin-like compounds which tackle pain and inflammation. I hope that some kind, computery-type genuis will supply the blue stuff so you too can read the article if you wish. It's interesting, I wonder though if I could find the courage to try it! DD

Well, there's the good news and the bad news.

Good news - although I've never ever been called any sort of genius before (for good reasons) I can manage to copy and paste.

Bad news - this study was first reported by the Beeb in 2001 so clearly no progress has been made in 10 years.

Worse news - the study consisted of 10 patients so wasn't statistically viable.

Better news - there's always paindullers & surgery.

Forum trip to Burma anyone? Sponsored by medical research, of course. Is yours a one leech, two leech or multi leech pain? A TKR to the first person to spot delboy in his budgie smugglers.
