Morning Everyone hope you all managed to sleep well and keep warm.
Well, my appointment was running exactly on time which was good.
The surgeon was a lovely man and answered all my questions and explained things really well. (once i started with the questions I couldn't stop and for those of you who I speak to on the phone will understand how he must have felt , a real chatterbox aren't I )
I was surprised that a follow up xray wasn't done, and I was a little disappointed that I didn't see the xray he did as I left the hospital after surgery I wanted to see his handy work.
However, he was very pleased with me
Then it got to the part where we talked about the odontoid op.
Well, he said if he was my surgeon he would be pleased to monitor me until he thought it was absolutely neccessary to do the op.
(my original surgeon said it wanted doing as soon as poss.) This surgeon says it isn't always best to do these ops straight away, but to wait and see if any more degeneration appears with careful monitoring. He says the more screws that are inserted into the neck/spine to fuse these areas can cause more problems further down the spine.
Anyway to cut a long story shorter, He is going to refer me back to my original surgeon at Leeds (although this man may now have retired he thinks, but has reassured me that the surgeon I would see will be good)
The reason.......Sheffield was too far to travel.
Although....if I am on a waiting list as long again he said I may be refered back to him. ( I asked him ...can't he come and do it at leeds )
So....I guess I will now have to wait and see......again.
Thank you all for your support

Hi Julie,
I'm so glad the surgeon is pleased, I know the watch and wait term is frustrating sometimes, but it sounds like you will be very carefully monitored.
I understand you wanting to see the X-rays, i was exactly the same when i had my shoulder operation, i just wanted to 'see' for myself what had been done. I asked my surgeons secretary for a copy of my xrays, my surgeon was more than happy to oblige, however, I wasn't expecting the 'album' of photos he had taken during my op, which he sent me i got before and after photos too perhaps if you ring your surgeons secretary and ask for a copy he might oblige you never know.
I'm delighted for you though Julie that this op was sucessful and out of the way. Onwards and upwards eh? Xxx'grá agus solas'

Aww Julie that is such good news...I am remembering the days up to your op...Phew we were all worried with you, and now you have got that out the way, you make sure they do that monitoring...but you do seem to have a good team around you.
Now you relax and carry on improving xxLove

Good for you girl, that sounded like a good appointment and to my mind he sounds more 'clued up' than your first surgeon. I think he is right with the monitoring etc, any op is a great stress on the body (as you have recently found out!) and it's best to minimise the amount one has done. I hope you are now feeling eeasier in your mind about things, I really do. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Glad you had a positive appt with your consultant Julie! And that your going to be monitored is very good plus your being refered to another consultant is bullseye as they say in darts. A all round top appt. I'm happy for you honey!0

Thankyou for your replies
I do feel much better for the time being and as I have said I am now armed with questions for the next surgeon. I just wish there was just one rule and they didn't all have different opinions.
Will keep you all updated as to what happens next and when my next app is.
I have a chest clinic on the 13th hope they don't want me to be a regular again
Have a good week-end

Dear Julie
So pleased it was a good, informative and positive appointment. That is the impression exactly that I get from my surgeon re not rushing into further ops unless totally necessary and to be monitored. I already have been told to see him in March which will be 6 months and then a further 6 months time which will be a year. He said exactly the same about the weakening of the spine lower down may happen, hence being looked after.
I hope you can cope with the pain and symptoms that you do get for the time being.
Promise I shall reply to your PM but I am finding that the week is going far too quickly for my liking and I seem to be glued to the spot and getting nowhere fast.
Enjoy your weekend
Thinking of you and lots of love
