    Hi yaris,

The oa does seem to crunch a 'bit'. There are different reasons why it does. Sometimes it just grinds together and cus the cartilage is worn it crunches and other times it so hurts when it does that.

Mine crunch a fair bit but I have the cartilages removed so its the bones rubbing together. Its just how it goes in my case but i think it might be worth mentioning it to your physio though.

Does your ones hurt when they crunch? Mine are just odd, misshapened and huge but they are like my hips and don;t give half the pain the spine and neck do. I do get one that regularly happens. Its a real clunking grind thing and its when they have locked up and I make them move with the hands. Cris x

    Hi Yaris

Mine crunch all the time pretty much - been told I have noisy knees cos of the arthritis.

Maybe speak to your physio and see what s/he says or your ortho!!

On the basis of no medical qualifications at all, but having had lots of physio I’d say it’s probably normal, keep going with the exercises but little and often and it may help to put a wheat bag on your knee first to warm it up a bit.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Lol, I have OA in both knees - one crunches walking up stairs, hills, etc; the other is silent. The crunchie one has been like that for approaching 20 years, but has only recently started to hurt, but only very occasionally! The silent one has only recently come out as arthritic and can be quite sore going up and down stairs and hills, or even occasionally in general, and isn't as strong as it used to be.

So yes they can be crunchie.

    Hi,
I was told that the technical/medical term for this is 'crepitus'. Layman's language - noisy knee.

My knees are dreadful. I've had physios fleeing rooms when they've had me doing squats - they're the ones asking me to try the squats yet can't put up with the crunching and grinding noise. If they try and 'brave it out' in the room they start to turn green. Being a bit mischevious I then threaten to dip again just in order to see them beg me not to ...

Now - when I say 'squats' please don't get excited. This means I merely dip at the knees as far as I can - which isn't far at all these days. I also can only do about three to four before the pain gets too bad and I stop anyway.

Personally I think when you have noisy knees you need a little flap in your knee which you can flip open, insert an oil can and give yourself a good old squirt of oil.

    I recommend ear-plugs - they work!

I have OA in both knees (worse in the right) the left on is silent and hurts alot when doing things like stairs and clutch on the car (looking for an automatic) but the right one grids clicks and crunches, some days the pain is mild and others the pain is so bad i shake and end up spaced out on painkillers, the crunching, grinding and clicking can get that loud you can hear it. and I believe the medical term for it is Crepitus.

    Hi Yaris

    How are you today?

Just seen my ortho and he has said that there is nothing surgically that they can do at the moment, but I do have OA and I am staying under the care of the pain consultant and physio when needed.

    Take Care
