Hi Legs yes I also saw your post about losing your friend. It did choke me. My Dad was in a Lancaster bomber at one point during the war and was lucky to survive those dreadful times.

    You've made me cry

Thank you so much for your kind wishes. And Colin how thoughtful of you to start this thread.

Let me tell you a little about my friend.

I first knew his wonderful wife when I joined Raleigh Ind. at the young age of 17. We became lifelong friends and when she retired I got to know her husband when I visited her every week, from work, in my lunch time.

He was always so smart, kind and one of nature's true gentlemen.

His first love was flying. He didn't talk a lot about the war but he was proud of piloting a Lancaster Bomber and did regale some of the lighter moments he and his crew experienced. He was shot down over Germany during night ops and became a prisoner for the last few years of the war.

As he was 94 he was gradually losing all his friends and then Christmas 2009 we lost his lovely wife. For the last 10 years he was nearly blind with macular degeneration so after his wife died I would go and read the paper to him and when he knew I was visiting he would catch a bus (occasionally stopping an articulated lorry by mistake  ) into town to buy us cream cakes from Birds (because he knew that the bus stop was outside the shop). His daughter visited him every other day as he could no longer see to cook and do other stuff. Last year due to failing health he had to go to live in a nursing home and although it was a brand new lovely place he detested it because it wasn’t his home. His brain was so sharp ……unfortunately ........because with poor mobility and no sight there’s nothing to do with your days but think.

He did say in all his war experiences and other awful times in his life the worst time and saddest was being without his dear wife.

I'm going to see him Thursday afternoon as he's being dressed and his daughter is pinning his medals on his chest and although this will be so hard for me I have to do him the honour of going to visit him one last time.

The British Legion are getting the Union Flag out for him to drape over his coffin on Friday and the few members left of the Air Crew Association will be there too.

He was a dear, dear man and I shall say for all to see that Robert Willis Petty you'll always be my very own hero and I shall miss you so very much.

    Rest in peace my friend.

    Lots of love, Linda XXXXXXXXXXXXX

I want to thank you all for your support last week.

The funeral was very sad and I found the service itself very emotional because of not long losing my dad, plus it was dear old Willis.

The Air Crew Association made an entrance of honour and there was a flag bearer all the way through the service lowering the huge flag very slowly during the committal. He had the RAF flag too draped over his coffin with wreaths of poppies on top. It’s hard to sing when you’re crying.

You'll all be glad to learn I'm okay now especially as I know he's reunited with his wife, my lovely friend and wherever they are they're together.

    Thank you once again.

    Love,
    Love, Legs x
