Since having Harry almost two years ago I've had various types of back pain starting with sciatica then generalised pain from neck to pelvis.

After Christmas it has become localised to mid to low section on right hand side. It has been getting worse and worse and now when I stand or bend I get a ripping feeling and everything spasms.

I've had MRI which showed nothing, so hospital are spectacularly not interested despite me going what do I do now still in agony.
I've started pilates to try and help plus seen an osteopath (she said last time I had a dislocated rib as well as muscle spasms) and am now on a diet to lose weight. GP's are not that interested either and have mentioned it about 4 times now. I am really really trying to help myself but I am getting desperate.

Anyone have any suggestions on either helping myself or getting help from somewhere else? I'm sure its worse as I'm lifting Harry but I can't not lift him so do I just have to put up with it (or just cry a lot)?

Plus its making me a proper grumpy bugger. Feel v guilty for shouting at husband and Harry.

Help.

My new drugs are working and

hi you need to get gp to send you to a physio to give you exercises that will help strenthen also try wheat bags to stop muscle spasams it so hard to live with pain it would make any one upset. good luck and ((())) val

Back pain and a (nearly) two year old are not a good combination as, despite their increased independence, there are still occasions when they must be picked up. Only two, probably not very helpful, things come to mind.

One is that, when mine were little, not because of back pain but pain in every arm joint, they had to get used to being picked up strangely ie rolled over my forearm or encouraged to climb onto a chair first.

Secondly, I suppose it's just possible that it's muscular, in which case shoulder and arm exercises might help.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I too am suffering with low back ache on the right hand side since I broke a vertebrae last year. I have just seen a physio who has pressed the area where I get the pain. It is painful when he touches it and he said it was the muscles there so gave me exercises.

I also mentioned it to my GP and he has made an appointment for me at the back clinic to be assessed.

It does make you grumpy and irritable.

    Hi,
Sorry all I can do is sympathise.....I have back pain but its scoliosis and arthritis in my lower spine so at least I know.
I find that heat and heat patches some times take the edge of it but you sound much worse than me.
I dont have a 2 yr old either....so thats all I can suggest except keep on nagging at different docs/physios/anyone until you get something done
    sendng (((()))))

    Hi Jenzie

Really sorry to read about your back pain. Really hope you get to the bottom of what is wrong very soon.

I understand totally having back pain myself.

A really good physiotherapist may be able to help you and find out the problem. I have read on the net that many people are left "to get on with it/the pain cannot be so bad/etc" because nothing shows on the MRI. So you are not alone there - one very small consolation. There is another procedure that can be carried out apparently called a discogram but it can be rather unpleasant.

I have pondered on the fact that back pain is often worse when one stands but an mri is always performed with the patient lying down. Perhaps this is why not all is revealed with an mri for some patients.

I do hope that you get helop soon, back pain is so debilitating especially when looking after a young child.

If you can lay down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone's day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day.

Thanks for the replies. I have scoliosis (not badly) too.

Think I might have to badger GP again. Seeing osteopath tomorrow to see if she can help Harry's glue ear (date for op for grommets and adenoids due any day) so will beg her for more treatment.

You are so right.......standing is so much worse than walking I think.
    Especially with scoliosis.
I never thought about an MRI been done when you are lying down :?
