does anyone know how long carers allowance can be backdated to. Just found out my son could have been claiming it for the last year or so.

Thanks
Les

In agreement with Colin , only backdated to application date . My hubby is my registered full time carer , you can apply if you get highest rate DLA both mobility and care but , have to say , it's a pittance ! Jillyb

    Hiya,
Just a note , carers allowance is paid if you receive the middle or higher rate of the care componant don't think its related to the mobility part. Also only back dated to date of your claim , also look into national insurance , as this can also be paid for caring duties. Like you my hubby and me knew nothing about this benefit and thats 14 yrs ago , looks like nothing much has changed. Now there is all the changes coming more money that should be claimed will not be known about , as my hubby has just said is that they are good at telling us what we can't have but not at what we should have.

    Hi,

    Good luck.

3 months was the limit. However I don't know what happens if you have an outstanding DLA claim, which may take a long time to sort. sometimes a DLA claim can go back a year and I'd like to think you would not lose out on carers because of the 3 month limit.

Take note that you can get extra Tax Credits if disabled and it is different rates for middle or higher. Again thee was a 3 month limit, now reduced to 1 month. I missed out on 5 months TC because I did not realise a jump from mid rate to higher qualified for more payments,

You now need 30 years HRP/NI to qualify for full state pension. I read you can transfer some years from a spouse to your own if they have more than the required amount. I hope I have got that correct!
