Bad hand day..the side effects.

Hi Folks.
Feel really fed up with my hand today.
Despite loveley warm weather it has been aching terribly of late and is so uncomfortable. Horrible tightness and soreness running through parts of the hand that I never felt before having the operation on it in May last year. I am beginning to think that surgery was a waste of time as It seems to be as uncomfortable as before and least I could move my thumb before the fusion.
Spent the day clenching my teeth and dreaming being pain free!
Some side effects of constant chronic pain that I have observed in myself is
1. constantly having to keep busy both in activities and thoughts, to try and distract oneself from being aware of pain.
2. Jealousy of able bodied pain free people, some of which are more than twice my age! saw an old boy digging his garden today and thought you lucky b*stard.
3. The rapid development of a somewhat dark but much needed sense of humour.
4.Not giving damm about stupid health advice such as eating Sri Lankan wild mountain raspberries prevents piles etc. All I want is pain free!!
Has anyone else observed such symptoms in themselves?

I think we all go through various different stages of denial, frustration, anger, acceptance etc and keep going through them as different bits of us start playing up. Maybe some more pain relief is called for, righthandman, or physio or just a bit of advice.
I’ve been here much longer than you and not only do I not dream of ‘painfree’ but I don’t think I’d recognise it if it turned up.
As for your ‘side effects’, I’ll wholeheartedly go along with nos. 1 & 3. No. 2 I don’t bother with as no-one knows what strangers have gone through or are going through. There are worse things in life than arthritis in a country where health care is free and some of those things leave no visible scars at all. No. 4? Well, some health advice is good and some seems dubious. No point in chucking the baby out with the bath water.
If you like dark humour try going back over the Chit Chat threads. Plenty there to keep you going. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Painfree? No thank you, it would only come back. I agree with Sticky, we have all been through the various stages you mentioned and we can only do what we can do to cope with whatever life throws at us. I never envisaged when younger that I would need a four-wheeled rollator to help me get about but I am now 53, I do and that's that. Yes, I envy those 70 plus bods who stride past me but then curse them as they let shop doors swing in my face. A sense of humour definitely helps and in the end it is just a matter of taking things one day at a time. You're on the right track with helping yourself, righthandman, and we're always here to listen. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi righthandman,
I'm sorry to hear that you've had a bad day. I've been getting those more often and its my hands i have a problem with, my right hand in particular hurts a lot and i'm righthanded and i have a nodule as well and it's all very painful. I envy everyone who's my age (twenties) who is all healthy and wish I was. I want a carefree life so badly. Life pfft. You're not alone though
Hope you start to feel better soon
Lots of love x0
