Knee Arthroscopy booked

At my last consultant visit I was told that basically I had such bad quality cartilage that they would " replace everything that can be replaced"

I had my first THR 2 years ago because there was no cartilage and no joint space. They just went in to repair my labral cartilage in the other hip - only to find no cartilage left - so another THR on the horizon in the autumn probably- but Knee arthroscopy will be first - already booked for June - then they will be able to plan better.

Will this just be another wasted journey into the joint I wonder? Seems pointless if so. All the pain from labral washout ( in the absence of cartilage) and femoral decompression.

Going for my 5th steroid injection into hip joint on Wednesday - seems never ending - and STILL I am at work and they think I am making a fuss about nothing because its ONLY arthritis x ha - rant over x

As I think I understand it, the knee arthroscopy should help to clear all the detritus from that joint and, if that proves to be the case, surely it will help the hip? I take it that the knee being 'done' is on the same side as the recalcitrant hip? I think it has to be worth a go purely on that basis: I know that surgery (like marriage) is not a thing to be undertaken lightly or wantonly but if it helps then that is what matters. I wish you well and keep us informed, yes? DD

    Hi

No - on the contrary - the knee is on the same side as the new hip. He has told me that he will do what he can but if it is too bad he'll have to sew me back up and then book me in for TKR. I'm so fed up already re hip - I had 8 weeks off work for labral repair and now need a THR as the op was not a success - may just as well have had one to start with.

My arthritis is really bad at the moment - both knees, ankles and wrists playing up as well as pain in my hip and pubic bone - and in addition it all makes me SO tired x but can't sleep more than a couple of hours when I do get to bed :(

Oh lawd, I dunno what to say as I am drooping with tiredness. I must admit that I would always go with a replacement rather than a 'fiddle about' (simply because my 'fiddlings about' have not worked that well and I have yet to be accepted for a replacement of any sort) but I reckon their success depends very much on one's general fitness before and not rushing the recovery after. I do think that we are, sometimes, caught between the arthritic devil and the arthritic deep blue sea. Right, beddy-byes beckons and I hope you manage to get some decent sleep tonight. (Me too for that matter, my day is now 19 hours long!) Take care and I wish you well. DD

Sometimes it does seem as if we are on the arthritic treadmill, moving from one op to another. I can well understand your frustration. I'm afraid fixing one joint can lead to the need to fix another. Can you get any more/different pain relief?
