Hey there I'm Lucy I'm 25 and have been suffering with hip pain for about 5 year however since january last year it's been chronic and is getting me down, I have had no proper diagnosis I have been told that my cartilage is small and then tendon issues. I have had MRI and ultrasound scan and a steroid injection( wasn't told to rest so didn't work) I have been in pain constantly however in the last 10 days this pain has increased and I can't seem to get relief. I have been to the pain clinic as opiods seem to send me to another planet - hallucinate and I was offered nortriptyline which made me very sick so only thing I'm relying on is ibuprofen- it doesn't seem to be helping though. I see the pain clinic in January and tomorrow at long last I will have a tens machine. I'm hoping so much this will help. Have any of you had any luck with these?

I feel quite down because I have overcome anorexia and I think I have damadged my body- no one will tell me that though and also I used to be more active now Im in
pain walking 5minutes up the road.
Is there hope for me. I'm at the point of wishing they would just remove my leg and hip thanks for reading

    Hi Lululucifer24,

I dont have hip trouble I have arthur in my hands, knees and 1 ankle, but personally I find that the tens machine does help, I have other painkillers, and I use the tens machine to top it all up just keep going through the programmes to find the one that starts working for you, I use it to control the pain better and I use it for 30 minutes bursts, but one thing I found is that I get a good response with it if I use it for a couple of weeks then give it a rest for a few days, or else your body will get used to it, and then you cant find it gives any relief.

I also change the programmes about 3 times a day, and that keeps the pain wrongfooted, and its lovely to get rid of the agonising pain that you get, as it does drag you down and then you find it so much harder to deal with.

this is my experience with the tens machine, hope it helps.

the professionals can certainly help with the pain, and you can learn to deal with it better through a lot of education on pain management, I did a course on that, and it really helped me deal a heck of a lot better with it all.

It will take time hon, but it will improve pain wise, trust me, I was at a point once when all I felt was like doing something stupid and stopping everything for good, but I got a lot of help from pain clinic, gp and going on a course that as I said deals with pain management.

good luck with it all, and the arthritis helpline is a good help too, they listen and can help in so many ways.

let us know how you get on with the tens machine, I hope it does help you. :-)

    Hi Lucy,

Firstly welcome to the forums sorry you are suffering.

i have used a tens machine it wasnt for me but everyone is different and i do hope you get some relief soon.

You have done extremely well to overcome anorexia so well done! Pain does wear us down and causes us to feel down, and yes the pains in my hands has made me feel like chopping them off but you will get better days.

Perhaps another injection may help and at least you will know to take it easy this time.

i am sorry you are suffering and that i cant be more helpful, i am sure someone will be along shortly with more experience of hip problems.

Thank so much for the reply. I feel more positive about it now. Do you still use it? And is it hard to use?

Physio won't have me at the minute as my pain is to high to do physio with and I'm awaiting hydrotherapy assessment to see if im
    Suitable for this.

I work for adults with learning disabilities and I'm
Well aware I'm not totally fit enough especially with the physicalities there but with the job situation at the minute I can't and don't want to be unemployed. I love my job too it gives me a sense of worth.

I find nights the hardest I ache so much.
    Hope your ok

Oh dear, poor you. I empathise with the pain aspect (24/7 all over the place) but I have to report that I didn't find any relief with TENs - I couldn't feel the pain when the thing was twitching away on me but as soon as they turned it off there it was, twanging away as it always did. Others, however, have nothing but praise for this machine and I sincerely hope you fall into that category. It won't permanently remove the pain but it may provide some relief from it for a while, and that is a good thing. It's one of the biggest bothers we all face in that what works like a dream for one person does absolutely nothing for another. I too congratulate you on your recovery from anorexia and I wish you well. DD
