Hi all,
any tips to help relieve the hip pain i have in 1 of my hips... its hurting to sit, lift my leg into bed, and driving is really painful first for getting in the car then the actual driving, i use an automatic these days as my left knee was replaced 5 years ago and have pain still everyday, i had a bone scan a couple of years ago and it showed then i had degenartive arthritis in both hips yet left (touch wood) is fine,
already taking cocodamol, pregabalin, amytriptiline, cymbalta, and nothing seems to be touching it...

Hi Liesa. Long time no see. Welcome back.
When my hip was really bad, just before the THR, I used cushions to sit on and tried not to sit for too long (though by the end I was sitting virtually all the time). A change of chair can help. Sometimes a hard one's better than a soft one as it supports the hip more.
Getting into bed etc - well, I've sometimes managed to hook my good ankle round the ankle of the bad leg and so use the good leg to lift the bad one. Mind you, if Mr SW was around, he was a lot quicker. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Thanks SW, im not usually far from the arthritis page, i cant do anything with my 'good' bad leg its the one with replaced knee almost 5 years ago its still 'orrible' so shifting between knees + hips to get comfy.... i try to limit my drinks now cos of getting up in the night and getting to the loo must admit i went out to visit my niece this morning and i asked to sit at the dining table i felt so comfy now back in my chair its back again but just taken painkillers so hopefully it will settle soonlove and hugs0

I`ve been having a lot of trouble with my lower back, and find that icing for about fifteen/twenty minutes, with a bag of peas, then slapping on a C*ra heat pad - very cheap in the pound shops - helps. The pad gives off heat for twelve hours. Also, the V*ltorol gel can sometimes help.......Rosie....x0

That was my Mum's remedy for any inflammation, Rosyglow. It makes sense as alternating heat and cold will get the blood supply to the area.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

the hips not an easy place to use the hot/cold method, its in my groin and butt cheek then as day goes on its outside my hip...love and hugs0

Hi Liesa, I know what your going through I suffer badly with both my hips, they swell and become extremely painful to a point I just break down and cry sometimes. I use pillows either side to cusion my hips (so sit on one side of cushion and bend other side to cushion hip.) that helps when sitting. When lieing in bed I raise both legs so they are above hip height again with cushions!! (we have alot of cushions in our house!! ) so it takes strain off hips. And if I'm still in pain I take oromorph on top of my M.S.T to ease the pain. I truely hope you find away to ease your pain, I'm with you, and understand what your going through. So if you ever want to reach out to someone who understands and curse hips and arther you are welcome to PM (private message) me whenever you want. Your wing woman!! bubbadog/Amanda.0

Hi Liesa
I have OA in hips n lower back. The pain is worst in Left hip which impacts on right knee when walking. My pain is in groin area lower back sometimes feel a shooting n stabbing pain going down leg or in back. I cry! To relieve pain at night I have a hot bath soak for at least 20 mins then use cold gel which helps reduce pain. I also notice having electric blanket on helps. I can't sleep otherwise pain too bad! I also try to keep active as sitting ,standing or even lying in same position joints get stiff n painful! I use the cold gel in groin area but be careful ! I'm still coming to terms with my pain but I know I have friends here who understand. Hope you get some pain relief soon!0 -
thanks Neicee, Amanda u know i pm'd u xx
am using hubbies netbook, so tiny my big clumsy swollen fingers keep hitting all sorts...lol
turning over in bed is awful i keep waking Steve with my loud noises, and if i find a comfy position i end up virtually unable to move and then more stiffness and pain.... getting into bed is really hard as is getting in and out of a car... makes me feel like i dont want to do anything, going out or to bed.... i hate that hip pain so much! fingers not much better...
again thanks all, need to get off laptop its to painful xxlove and hugs0 -
i've been in so much pain in my right hip this morning... getting in and out of the car this morning was/is pure agony... walking upstairs to the bathroom is also very painful... lifting my leg into bed is so sore... am feeling really sorry for myself, keep running around helping my family nnow home and feeling the pain so bad even tho i've taken pain meds.... even used the 'deep freeze' spray, has eased but i suspect thats cos im sitting down...
why is it absolute agony getting in and out the car???
thought of going to my Dr but dont think he can give me anything else....
any other ideas please?love and hugs0 -
I don't know why getting in/out of the car is so bad, Liesa. Some things that come to mind that might help:
1. A cushion to sit on if the seat is lower at the back than the front.
2. Sitting down first then bringing both legs in together, stabilising your bad leg with the better one.
3. Some people put a plastic bag on the seat as it enables them to swivel easier.
4. Turning the whole leg inwards a bit before lifting it can help.
I'm sorry you're still doing stairs. What happened to the downstairs loo they were putting in for you?If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
Steven Wright0 -
Hiya
will try to remember to take a plastic bag out with me...
ahh the downstairs loo... got the go ahead but it would take a big chunk out of the dining room, the OT has said we should wait plans all submitted and given green light but she said if the gastric bypass goes ahead and i lose loads of weight then getting around faster and more abled body i may not need a downstairs loo, OT reccomends we wait.... last year when i saw the consultant at kings has funding all in place etc etc but... theyre doing so many more that the waiting list is growing but theConsultants are doing less per week in order to do privately... i wenton the list from feb 2011 told it was approx 12 month wait.... i'm told they are still doing people from october/november 2010...
so being patient and just waiting...love and hugs0 -
I get the picture. Hang on in there though. I know someone who had the op and she looks and feels terrific. She has really seized her opportunity with both hands and is making it count.
In the interim, do you have a stairlift?
As for the plastic bag - just leave it in the car. Some people also use them for dining chairs. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Oh poor you Leisa
I am so sorry your hip is playing you up so much
getting in/out of the car is very painful isn't it?
Did you say scans 2 years ago??
Could you ask for an up to date Xray??
My MIL had had an Xray (mild degeneration) and 2 years later another - had her hip replaced within three months
Hugs to you and LOVLEY to see you

Liesa,
I have had major hip problems over the last few years with 2009-2011 spent almost entirely on crutches because of a mass of congenital problems with them which caused arthritis and lots of inflammation and damaged soft tissue inside and outside the hip - what I am saying is that I do understand hip pain and how painful it is!
I struggled to get pain relief which got rid of the pain but the best thing by far was a Hottie. A hot water bottle that you put in the microwave and then you can wrap it on the painful hip. It works wonders and my Hubbie became used to warming the Hottie up every two hours or so in the microwave. It was the best painkiller of all. Hotties are available on Amazon if that helps.
The car can be tricky but remember to swivel to the side when you get out rather than stepping out one foot at a time.
Good luck and I hope the hip feels better soon.0 -
always offering such sweet sympathy thankyou xxx
i had bone or body scan i think 3 years come september 15th (my birthday hence remembering lol) and it showed early degenerative arthritis of both hips, my left one is fine not a twinge but right one is awful,
just had a lovely soak in the bath... thought it may help with the aid of the bath seat cushion, Steve bless him helped hold my leg, its awful lifting up
well now i feel a little better i best relax, thanks again you lovely people you always lift my spirit xxxxxxxlove and hugs0 -

Hi Liesa,
Sorry I'm late adding to your thread.
Have you tried a TENs machine? With the pain moving around your hip you can put the pads on different places to try to ease the pain - the groin could be a bit of a problem but there's probably a way around that too.
If you haven't got one you could ring your GPs surgery or OT and ask if they could loan you one to see if it works before you buy.
I do find mine gives me some relief along with my painkillers.
Hope you can get some respite from the pain.

Hi Liesa,
I find you have to shift position frequently otherwise the hip sticks and locks up. I'm finding mine is really bad at night if I lay on my better side. It is agony to move again.
Applying heat also helps.
I'm due a THR so I wonder if yours needs reviewing.
