Hi
I am waiting to get a new knee and was told to lose weight which I have done (lost 3.3lbs to date)...Now to do this I had to attend a gym have a programme designed specailly for me and go for extra hydrotherapy aqua exercises. This has taken well over a year but that to me is the sensible way and not crash dieting....
Problem is have now developed hip pain which started off in good legs hip but now have pain in both hips, this can be when im sitting, getting up and walking...I did think that it was triggered by a new machine they put me on at the gym called a hip abdictor but since have knocked it on the head after nearly fell over....Even find if havent had a good sleep wake up with both hips aching like buggery.....Have been to see doc and she diagnosed trochanteric bursitis and told me to rest, but ironically the more weight can lose the better so cant win! Also told me it could have been as a result of me exercising too much....This was when only had one sore joint now its the two so hoping to see her again as not sure the treatment for this...
Would love to hear from other who have experienced this.....
Thanks
Elainex

Hi Elaine,
Well done on the weight loss!!!!!!!
I've also had trochanteric bursitis but minw was triggered by the RA. Endured weeks of pain and sleepless nights due to it, all the doc could advise was losing weight and using more pain killers. When I saw the rheumy nurse she suggested steroid injections in both hips/thighs- well I had to wait 9 weeks for an appointment and finally got it done last wednesday, had to have 2 days in bed afterwards but I'm glad to say that they seem to be working!! Happy days- I've just had 2 nights of reasonable sleep without pain killers for the 1st time since christmas. So don't give up, but maybe ask about steroid jabs to reduce the inflammation?
Hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Deb
Thanks for the congratulations, its not easy but after got turned down by one consultant had to seek 2nd opinion and he was helpful, he has told me my osteochondritis in left knee which is grade 4 is not any more worse than it was a year ago, so have stopped further degeneration....
Steroid injections, have had them in my knee and they didnt make an difference but they may work in this bursitis.....I do have a hellish fear of needles too so they would have to whack me on the head with a mallet!! But seriously would do anything to relieve this as when I get up and they are sore I feel like a Weeble!!!
Glad to hear your injections went well!!

Hi,
When I went for my injections they used a spray to freeze the skin, then gave me a long lasting local anaesthetic before the steroids- it was okay and really not painful so don't be worried about it. I think the key to having it work is resting for a couple of days afterwards to give the steroid chance to stay in situ and begin to work- the boredom of 2 days in bed nearly sent me insane, but I was so desperate for relief I hung in there- and nagged my OH quite a lot I fear .
Hope it works for you if you can get it.

Hi Deb
Oh ive never had local anaesthesia for anything so wouldnt really know what that would be like and would worry...I can but try to see if it is available mind you as the pain is getting worse...
Thanks for your reply...

Hi Elaine
Im so sorry your hips have joined in, it just not fair you have done everything you could, and now this.
I should imagine you are putting more weight on one side due to you limping, so hopefully it is bursitis and not wear and tear on the hip, ask about a steroid injection, I have had two now the first one did nothing but I have had some relief with the second one
I do wish you well with it all x
Oh just a point if you used a stick it may help to take the weight off your hips.Love

Hi Barbara
Well yes I am aware that because of my limp it would impact somewhere else, I guess I ddint think the two hips woulld hurt as much as they do now...I wake up every morning now and they ache, getting comfortable in bed is hard too, have been sleeping on my back recently...I do use a walking stick on my bad knee's side..
Can only ask about the injections and be brave and go for it...

Hi Elaine, I was also told that because I walk with a limp and my whole body is sort of 'out of kilter' because ot this, that this is why my hips hurt.
X rays showed there was no OA in my hips.
You say you use your stick on the side of your bad knee :?
I've always been told to use a stick (I sometimes use a crutch as it seems to support me far better than a stick ) on my good side, so that's what I do.
Only, it's not really a 'good' side anymore, as the previously better knee is fast catching up with the bad one!
Let us know if the injestions work if you decide to try it. Hope you overcome your fear of needles. They don't bother me.Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans.0 -
Elaine ,Please have the steroid injections early get it done over and then you can get back to your healthy regime maybe more hydro and less gym ....The steroid injections are not at all bed and I have had many i9n various joints I think when they are given with the local ....they are less painful than when someone takes blood badly .......The knee probably had a fair bit of osteo/bone growth stopping the steroid from working This happend to me the rhumy said there was not enough space but in general I have found them brilliant good look Elaine Marrianne0

Hi Puschinka
That does make sense to me that if someone does walk (my own words) not quite normal then something will suffer...I guess I thought I was doing okay having the knee condition and now the operation is due for end of the year, thought once that was done things would be fine....
I think i have inadvertently told a porkie, I use stick on my good side, sorry head not in gear!! Like you I dont feeel I have a good side now just praying the other knee dont give out on me too..
I dont think I will ever overcome fear of needles, had blood taken few weeks ago and it took two of them, me laid down and then the plaster she put on afterwards brought me out in an allergic reaction!! Just something I have...
Thanks for your response...

Hi Marianne
Well I would never say I enjoy the gym its an effort and I tell them when they try to re-jig my program and its not right - I know my limits....The hydrotherapy I do enjoy, there is me and a load of fellas one night and the other night for aqua exercises its a good group too, always enjoy it....Plus I do have to work hard to lose weight, diet alone wouldnt have shifted my 3stone 3llbs...I needed to find a solution and it took lots of sweat n tears but if i can do it anyone can!!
Had the injections in knee twice, everyone told me id feel the effects right away and it never happened but its worth a try...Ironically my dad has the same condition (he has had TKR and THR) and he gets ultrasound treatment but only for less than 5 mins at a time...
Thanks for the good luck....
