Hi Folks
I have really bad OA I have already had 2 joint replacements done, a knee and a shoulder. About 3 years ago I stopped taking Meloxicam and lost 3.5 stone, I stopped them as I had Gall Stones & they were affecting my liver,
The Gall stones are now gone and I am back on the Meloxicam and sadly have put on 4.5 stone in less than 2 years, Its hard to be positive when Im so large,
Does anyone take Meloxicam and has anyone else have the same problem with it?
I also take Hydroxychloroquine so maybe that is making the problem worse.
Thanks for your help and keep up the good work

Hi Carol,
Not sure about that drug but do know about the weight gain thing and how hard it is to get rid of it as well.
I know mine comes from the snail pace I go at and being unable to really exercise too much and also, they say, the pregabs..... I forgive them though as they work so well but must stop the weight as it don;t help does it?
Hang in there and hope someone will come along who knows about the drug and can help you more. Cris x0 -
I've never taken meloxicam. I have taken hydroxychloroquine for years with no effect on my weight. I always thought the weight gain with meloxicam was in the form of fluid retention and that the GP should be told of this. Sorry I can't be of more help.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I agree with Stickywicket. There is a warning on Meloxicam to see your doctor if you have unexplained weight gain. You could also ask your Pharmacist about it as well. You only get one life, love it, live it, grow old disgracefully !!0

Hiya,
I tried Meloxicam, was on it for a month and it never helped with the pain and I put on 7pds. I told my dr that I wanted to stop it, mainly for the fact it wasn't doing anything for the pain. He didn't believe me when I said I thought it was the meloxicam that caused the weight gain. It's been very hard trying to shift the extra weight.
Take care,

Think this is the answer. Meloxicam inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX), the enzyme responsible for converting arachidonic acid into prostaglandin H2—the first step in the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are mediators of inflammation.
However prostaglandins are a powerful class of hormones that control the body. The most powerful effect foods have on your body is their effect on these hormones and hormones like insulin. If insulin levels are high or prostaglandins are imbalanced, weight loss can be difficult if not impossible. As insulin helps you store fat as well as regulating blood sugar levels an imbalance may be what is causing the weight gain. You only get one life, love it, live it, grow old disgracefully !!0
