Low platelets...

Just wondering if anyone else has low platelets. My platelet count has always been on the low side and my previous rheumy seemed unconcerned, & I plodded on nicely, I did have to stop gold injections once though. My new rheumy seems more concerned and won't increase my methotrexate at the moment, he says if it dosen't improve they will have to reconsider the methotrexate. Have already tried leflumonide which resulted in lower platelets & hair loss, tried Humira but now can't have any of the biologics. Does anyone know what causes platelets to be low, or is just "one of those things" ?

Hi Lupin,
Nice to see you again.
I got the opposite and mine are way to high so can't really help you there but hope the gp can tell you maybe? Cris x0 -
According to my little blue meth book in which my blood tests are recorded it says platelets are needed for blood clotting and a low count may indicate that meth is damaging the bone marrow. (Don't you have one of the books, Lupin? You should have if you're on meth. If not, ask for one.) I'm like skezier, usually hovering around the high side of normal. Thanks for your replies, at least it seems my new rheumy is on the ball.
Stickywicket, no I don't don't have a little blue meth book but I will look into it!0 -
Please do look into it, Lupin. There was someone on here a while back who didn't have one but, when I first started on meth, it was impressed on me that I should carry it around all the time (I don't  but I do have a wrist tag saying I'm on meth) because all the blood test results are recorded in it. I have to hand it in to the surgery every time I order more meth so that they can check it first and keep it up to date. If ever there's been the slightest of glitches they've always asked me to have another blood test first before they'd prescribe more. It can be a bit of a nuisance but I'm just glad they're on the ball.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
