i have been adviced by my back to work support woman at the job centre to apply for dla,

1, i hate the thought of having to go through a repeat of the rubbish atos do with esa (i have been called in for another medical soon) and worry about how best to get the form filled in,

2, do you have to have medicals etc for dla, what is the normal prosess for claiming this apart from form filling,

i supose by her sergesting it she has finally realised im not going to be able to join the olympics or work squad anytime soon and no magic wand exsists so she will lighten up on me but its also like a rubber stamp on the form, you aint ever going to get your old self back your knackered and its official.

mixed feelings about it all and how to go about it, has anyone gone through the process of applying for dla?

    Hi Coco

If this woman at job centre has suggested you apply for DLA, ask her to help you fill the form in....I think you just fill the form in and then they decide if they need to assess you and its same route as ESA, I could be wrong and if so stand corrected...Im also thinking too it would still be ATOS doing medicals but again tell me if im wrong...

Whatever you decide to do good luck

    Hi CoCo

Don't think of it like that, think of it as a little extra help so you can continue to enjoy some of the things in life you like to do.

I was recently awarded HRM and HRC and I didn't have a medical. Your GP has to fill in a form for you and this holds a lot of weight with your claim so speak to yours and give them the heads up.

Definately get help completing the form. Always remember to tell them about your worse days and angle your replies towards the negative not positive. Eg. Don't say: I can walk 50 metres. Say: I am unable to walk more than 50 metres without severe pain.

It's not lieing its simply answering in a manner that will get you the support you need. They tend to skim read the form so when they look through they see the 'I can'. When you want them to see the 'I cannot'.

    Good luck with it.

Pain does not count for anything, neither does your medical condition.

If you cannot walk at all without experiencing "severe discomfort" then you put "nil" metres on the form. Severe discomfort can include "breathlessness".

You also have to put your walking speed, keep it slow-ish.

Regarding the care side tell them everything about you needs for assistance, even if you do not get the assistance that you need. It does not matter even if you live alone, let them know how and what you need.

However tell the truth as you never know one day there may be someone watching you.

I have recent first hand experience of that.

The initial decision will be based on what you put in the application form, they will believe you as it is up to you to provide the "burdon of thruth".

If you answer all questions according to the form guides it should be granted to you.

    Good luck.

    Hi Coco,

Its not quite the same as ESA. For my last forms I got help to fill them in (essential IMO ) and didn't need a medical or visit. They usually write to your GP and/or consultant to back up what you have written on forms.

Also mention any falls, the lack of sleep, the difficulties doing everyday things such as washing, cooking and dressing. I'd mention your recent broken arm incident too.

They tend to turn most people down at first so you might have to appeal. The forms are long and daunting which is why it is important to get an experienced person from CAB to fill them in with you. Get an appointment with CAB sorted asap as the wait may be long.

    All the best
