Pain meds for OA

What meds are you on for OA?
Atm I take Co-codamel 30/500 1x3 times a day + 8/500 if pain worse. If it is really bad and I can hardly move I would take 2x30/500 but I avoid that much if possible. I also take 1x300mg Gabapentin at night and know I can take one in the morning too if I need to.
I have had a week where I have been taking the extra 8/500 to dull the nerve pain in my left hip and leg (referred from my back I think).
It seems to be coming back after 2-3 hours though and I have to wait until I can take the next dose.
I don't want to keep upping the Co-co's and wondered if there is anything else the doctor could give me. I have tried Tramadol but it made me violently sick so had to stop it.

Hi..
I was on dihydrocodiene for quite a well. It's a strong one but it did help me until I became used to them  I then had to keep increasing the dose. I would only recommend short term use.. I was on them over ten yrs and boy did I know it when I tried to stop.
Arrange an appointment with the GP to discuss other meds also?
Best of luck..

Been there, done that - never again.
That is what I was on when I had my slipped disc. 12 weeks of the strongest dose they could give me and I still couldn't even get out of bed.
No-one told me I had to come off them gradually. I spent a night going cold turkey not realising what was wrong with me. When I went to the doctors in the morning thinking I had some sort of illness she told me I should only come off the tablets very slowly. I hate the thought of being addicted to anything so vowed I would never take them again.
I think a visit to the doctors or pain clinic may be an idea.0 -
Hi
i am on meptid, amatryp, paracetamol, just come of naproxin and i take prednisolone 20mg a day x jane0 -
Hi there
Why has your gp not prescribed you any anti inflams aong with the cocos? The cocos should be taken regularly to be of benefit to cope with the pain,or that is what I have been told. I used to take the strongest, maximum dosage every day along with the anti inflams. Now that I have had both knees replaced I no longer need the cocos but still take the anti inflams for all the other aches and pains that I have from OA. I came off the anti inflams very recently to see if I could be without them but after three days of literally aching all over, I am back on them and a much happier bunny.

hi pollysid,
I take diclofenic 50mg 1 3 times a day to keep the swelling down, plus 30/500 cocods 2 3 times a time when things a bad i also take 1 tramadol 50mg with them and another tramadol about an hour later. I also take omeprazole as a tummy settler as the diclofenic upset me, plus fybergel for constipation that I get from taking this lot.
its just painkiller and more painkillers.0 -
Co-cos 30/500 (currently taking two in the morning and two in the evening). Is that enough? No, but I need to be able to function adequately during the day. I chew calcium and vit D tablets (when I remember!), I have diclofenac for emergency use and tramadol for dire occasions. I am firmly of the view that we have to learn to live with pain - it's a feature of arthritis and it never goes away. The crutches and rollator help mobility, and frequent little rests aid what stamina I have left. My other meds have subdued the PsA but the OA is a different beast altogether. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi I was diagnosed recently with OA but I am awaiting more tests.
At the moment I am taking 2 Tramadol and 2 x 300 Gabapentin four times a day.
I cant get out of bed in the morning for the pain once I have had my first lot it is easier to move, but still need help getting dressed. By late afternoon after having my third lot its much better but then the cycle starts again. Wake up at 3 am wait till 6 am take tablets.
The dr says its until I get used to them.
Hope you are getting better x0 -
my last GP (left them quickly after this experience) made me stop the dihydrocodiene over night.. Bearing in mind I was at that point taking two 90mg per day and anything up to ten 30mg a day
I went through three weeks of hell.. I was sooooooo angry at her :x
At least once I was through it I was through it lol...
I'm currently being messed around over the pain meds. Just trying to stop the fentanyl patches. Then I'll just be on diclofenac and paracetamol... Will have to discuss with the pain clinic as soon as they send for me..
Best wishes.. Let us know what the doc says..Me-Tony

I take 2 50mg of tramadol 3 times a day, 1 600mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day, Zomorph 40mg twice a day, Amitriptyline 25 mg at night which is due to be increased this week and also introduce gabapentin. I also take an antidepressant and a tummy saver tablet as well. I'm sure I rattle.
Even with that lot I am still in pain. I would hate to think how bad it would be without.

My goodness, I wish I hadn't asked now. There are so any different medications it is confusing. I really hope I don't need to take as many as some of you do. I have got a bit of an aversion to taking medication and held off for as long as I could before taking any.
This has moved along so quickly from working and just taking the odd tablet if I ached a bit more than normal to now taking them regularly and having days when I can hardly get out of the chair or walk. That is since last July.0 -
Mine started in my neck and shoulders in the middle of last year, it was painful and uncomfortable. Now I have severe pain in my hips which is awful and need help to get dressed. I cant believe how fast it has moved.
Hope you get yours sorted quickly
