I got laughed at today by a new lady at work who is from 'Dahn Sarf' (down south). I said I had bought a new pair of pants & she was at a complete loss as to why I would be telling her this.

Turns out that a 'pair of pants' means 'underwear' south of these parts, where as I was telling her I had bought a new pair of TROUSERS!

What do you think 'a new pair of pants' means????

Boys wear pants, girls wear knickers and both genders wear trousers. The term 'pants' for trousers was, I thought, exclusively an American thing. If someone says pants to me I think underwear, I don't think trousers but if that someone is American then I do know what they mean. DD

PS Amercians wear suspenders to hold up their pants. I must admit I adore the mental image that proffers!
