Hello Heather and Hileena.
Thanks Heather - you are right that it's hard to get the balance right and I think it will take my body a bit of time to adjust to life without the codeine. Glad that the codeine does give you some relief from your neck pain though.
From what you and Hileena have said, prune juice definitely seems to be the answer!

Hi Tilly,
For the constipation try dried apricots, they are really tasty and really help me with my constipation!! I eat about 5 in one go with a drink and they seem to helpLOVE EMMA X0 -
HinTilly you poor thing
you need to take paracetamol they are the most tummy friendly. you must take capsuls and not tablets again the capsuls are better for the tummy. Some people say they are not strong enough but it depends how you take them.
2X 500mg capsuls breakfast dinner tea and bed it really does work, once the pain is eased you can ajust the dosage to suit.

Thanks Emma and Colin.
Colin - thanks for the tip - and I think I read elsewhere that you are in hospital waiting for surgery, so just wanted to say I will be thinking of you and hoping it all goes well.
Emma - like the idea of dried apricots - they sound much more palatable than prunes or prune juice

Am glad to find this thread, I'm having problems with codeine too.
I am trying kiwis at the moment, 1 morning & evening, my mum says they always sort her out!
Have recently started Codeine/Paracetomol 30/500 (2 tabs usually 3 times a day) with Naproxen 500mgs twice a day. Felt terrific initially, pain much better controlled, but also felt a bit sick, so am now taking stemetil as well which seems to do the trick. But the constipation is AWFUL! I'm prone to it anyway; am on a regime of albran and prunes (no soak ones from Sainsburys) & prune juice plus lactulose. Was also taking Lloyds senna tablets, but they give me gripey tummy ache; try to drink lots, but I can't keep that up if I go anywhere because I need to wee so frequently!
I did try lots of fresh grapefruit & oranges, but developed something a bit like cystitis & was drinking bicarbonate in water for that (vile, like epsom salts!) I guess I am still working on this!0 -
Gosh another bunged up codeine user here!
I am fed up of having one medication to relieve a problem only to get another from that medicine.
I was given lactulose from the pharmacist, it is working quite well. 10ml with each meal works a treat.
My daughter had stomach migraines and often was bunged up or had the runs. She was given fiber gel and it worked for both. I did ask the doc if it would really help with the runs and she said it will, it really did regulate her so I wonder if it would work for you too.
phew as for codeine on the streets. Why on earth would anyone take it for recreation, it can make me feel sick, sleepy and really out of it if I take the higher dose. How come I'm over the hill and rapidly going down it, when I don't even recall reaching the summit?0 -
I've only skimmed the thread so sorry if it's been mentioned but I find stool softeners are better. Dulcoease saved me after my ankle operation when the anaesthetic led to my bowels completely stopping working. It was horrendous but regular dulcoease tablets really did help. xx0

Hi Tilly
Sorry I have only just seen this
Like some of the others it has to be prunes or prune juice, much better than taking more chemicals to unblocked you, I have had stomach pain with cocodamols even though I take the stomach protector....I have asked my GP for patches but he hasn't agreed yet, maybe its the cost... :?
God luck with it all xLove

buy a packet of organic "free from" prunes from sainsburys in the green packets. have 3 or 4 morning and evening and ensure you drink lots of water. a simple healthy way for me to keep things clear.0
