I am writing this whilst in the middle of a really horrible flare up and I have noticed over time something strange.
I imagine its normal to go off of food when in extreme pain and yet I crave food when my pain gets really bad, now when I say food I actually mean junk like cake and chocolate and its obviously not very helpful because I need to lose weight not put more on.
Do any of you snack more when in pain?

Yes, yes, yes. I snack on junk food when I'm in pain, also when stressed! This coupled with a lack of exercise has had a disastrous effect on my waistline!
Hope your flare soon eases.
Wishing you well,

I find sweet stuff is usually all I can face when I'm flaring.. Hence not being able to remember the last time I had a full meal
Hope it eases soonMe-Tony

I know when I am in a true flare because all I want to eat is plain Hula Hooops and drink full-fat coke. I had a flare that lasted a couple of months and despite the rubbish diet I lost weight. I think our bodies try to tell us what they need to help them cope with the demands of a flare, in my case a high-powered mixture of salt and sugar! I hope you feel better soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

I pop in every now and then, pain levels are still causing me to be very inactive and I haven't managed to get in the kayak since last year.
Its now 2 years since I had the TKR and I should have stood firm and said no, its the worst thing ever as I am in more pain and my mobility took a huge nose dive, the consultant said it could take time but that didn't work and then I was told it is less successful on younger people.
I also really hate the fact that I have way less range of movement in the knee and it clonks very loudly which hurts like mad despite the consultant saying it can't as its metal but it does
So i tend to not post on here too much because firstly I don't want to scare others that are to have TKR as it can be really successful and secondly I received a reply a little while back that actually really upset me, I was basically told I can't be in that much pain because of my kayaking, it may have been an over reaction but when you are in so much pain it makes you cry and you get that its difficult, I love my kayaking and its the one last thing that makes me feel alive.0 -
Hi Zech... Whoever said that to you should be ashamed
At least you are trying to cling to something you used to enjoy, and surely once you're in it's not too bad on the knees :?:
And as for putting younger folks off, I think we should know both sides of the coin, I for one don't just want to hear the positives, it helps to make an informed decision..
I still want both mine done, I am 43, but have had pain in them since about 13...
Cheers, take it easyMe-Tony

Oh Zech
I do remember you and the kayaking...and I also remember all the pain you was in when you first came on here, I think there was talk of getting rid of the leg...please dont think you have to say everything is al right on here, I know what you mean about upsetting people when being negative, but we cant be positive all the time, it will do you good to get it all off your chest.
You take care xLove

I'm another cake-fiend, especially when my pain is really bad. I blame the meds, but I think its also comfort eating.
I don't want to eat meals when I'm like that, however - proper food, no way0 -

hi you should never stop posting people need to know all there is to know and that it does not always help you sound a very balanced person that can give advice to those who have a need for it only you can make decisions for your self but at a guess you would have given the op a chance because there was a chance it would be much better i am sorry it did not work out that way.
i do not know who told you you should not be kayaking i loved canooing when i was younger and know what great exercise it is and it helps keep depresion at bay so when you can go for it we all need exercise it just finding the one that suits you valval0 -
I crave cake too, donuts actually and toast and butter so no you're not on your own. Take care and stay as pain free as possible x Dee x0
