Oromorph questions

Hello knowledgeable peeps.

I have been to the GP this morning and he has prescribed Oromorph solution 10mg/5ml for me to take at night (instead of the codeine) to see if it helps me to sleep through my current severe problems with restless leg syndrome.

I haven't had Oromorph before and have a couple of questions - I know there are others who take it so I'm sure someone will be able to advise me.

I know that most people take Oromorph for pain dulling, rather than for its soporific qualities, but I would like to know if you find it does make you sleepy - and if so, how long after taking it you find it starts to take effect (ie, do I need to be in bed when I take it :? )

Secondly, do you find that it has a "hangover" effect when it wears off? Would just like to be prepared.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks.

Tillyxxx

Hi Tilly, I had oramorph for 9 months for its pain dulling properties due to fibroids crushing my kidney and spinal nerves ( I was tested for every known abdominal problem except that!!) Sorry, I digress.

My dose was 10ml when needed and it only made me drowsy if I had it roughly the same time as I took my tramadol, and it was very short lived, I had no residual drowsiness afterwards, I used to take it at various times of the day and just carry on with whatever I was supposed to be doing. You are advised not to drive when using it as it affects some more than others, it may be a case of trial and error to get the dosage correct for your needs. You do become resistant to its effects though and eventually need to titrate to a higher dose if its long term, but your dr will advise about that.

Hope it is effective for you x

I haven't used it for years but I sincerely hope it helps matters. I think, as with all these things, it will be a matter of trial and error until you find the dose that suits you. ((())) DD

I have had oramorph in hospital, wonderful stuff!!! :D

I take MST and find that dulls the pain, but the drowsiness effect wears off quickly. I also have amitryptyline to help me sleep.

I hope you find something that works for you Tilly you deserve a break.

Thanks so much peeps for your replies.

I had my first dose a couple of hours ago and it does seem to have helped the ole legs somewhat, although I can feel it wearing off already.

Will take more at bedtime and see what happens.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Tilly

I take the tablet form every day at 40mg and tbh it doesn't make me drowsy but when I had my hip done and got the DVT I had the liquid form and wow that was goooood stuff lol.

    Really hope it helps you.

I've been given Baclofen to help with my shaking and it's really helping me sleep as well. If the oromorph doesn't work you could try asking about this.

Thanks Fols for your reply and for the information about Baclofen. Haven't heard of that but will make a note of it in case I need to mention it to the GP.

Well, I took 10mls Oromorph mid afternoon because my legs and arms were getting really "jumpy" again and it certainly helped me to sit more comfortably. I took another 10mls about an hour before bed and it worked brilliantly! No trouble with the legs at all and managed to sleep for 5 hours

Just got to chase the GP for some more now because I have realised that the bottle I have will only last until Monday.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

Hi Tilly, as you know I've had a long relationship with Oromorph! It do's make you sleepy and you feel sort of tipsy. It is great to take before bed, it takes around 15mins to take effect and usually lasts upto 4hrs.
When your new to the med it works like a dream and it helps alot. In the morning you do feel hangovery so that is the not so good part!
Hope you get good relief and what we have all said will help you get on with Oromorph.

    Thanks so much Bubbadog.

Didn't work so well for me the second night I took it, but yesterday evening and night it worked brilliantly and I slept for nearly 6 hours! Hurrah for Oromorph!. Just hope I don't build up a tolerance to it too quickly because having found something which works, I don't want to be back where I was.

    Thanks again.
