Hi I have just joined the forum today and have a question on Bakers cysts.

A bit of history, a have had what I would call mild arthritis since childhood spending up to 2 wks at a time in traction when I was 8-10 yrs old due to hip and knee joint problems, since then I often get sore hips and knee's when it's cold and wet or if I've been ill and recently had a lot of back problems which I have been seeing a chiropractor for.
I also get pain in my left wrist and at the moment it is very sore and I am having to wear a support (doesn't help having to pick up a 2 yr old!).

In the week I had a bit of pain in the back of my right knee but thought I must have pulled something, then within the space of a day a squichy lump formed and my calf swelled going quite hard. Went to doctor who asked if I suffered from joint problems and then said she suspected I had a Bakers cyst which has ruptured.
From what the doctor said and what I have read it is possible that the cyst has formed due to wear and tear in the knee and I have either osteo or rheumatoid arthritis.
I did have an appointment booked with the doctor in a couple of wks anyway before this happened as I am starting to get fed up with being in pain most days but I have always just put up with it.

I am now waiting for an ultrasound appointment, will they scan both knee's or just the one suspected?

Also I am due to go abroad mid June, is there any problems with flying with a Bakers cyst or one thats ruptured?

Sorry if it's a bit long!

Hello, it's nice to meet you and I am glad you have found us. I have no experience of your current trouble so cannot help - I apologise - but I hope that someone who has will spot this and reply. The forum is often quieter at week-ends so if you don't receive an immediate specific reply don't despair! I wish you well. DD

    Hi
My hubby had a ruptured bakers cyst early last year,he was in alot of pain and at hospital they gave him blood thinner in case it was a DVT, till he could have his scan the following day, this showed it was a cyst, he was in pain for a few days and was told to raise up the leg whenever possible, it took around 4 weeks for it to go down.
I am sorry I dont know about flying with it you must ask your GP, but I really do hope you get on your holiday.
Sorry I forgot to say welcome to the forum x
    Love
    Barbara

Thanks for your welcomes and replies.

The pain it's too bad until I over stretch or fully bend it, been told it could be 2-3 wks before the scan!

Forgot to ask about the flying at the time but hopefully the appointment and visit back to doctor happens before June.
If I'm lucky the appointment I booked for the end of the month about the general pain will now double up as the scan results (unless it all happens before).

I've been sitting with my leg up when I can but it's not that easy with a toddler running about, my partner is keeping her occupied in the garden most of the time but I'm so use to being up and about it's difficult to stay still for long.

What's the likelyhood of there being one in the other knee as well, as both ache, creek and click frequently?

Joints creak and click for all reasons - even those without arthritis have clicky joints. Cysts are balls of fluid and I think tend to be on the silent side. I hadn't a clue about my ovarian cyst until it all went badly wrong. You will certainly need medical advice about flying, and in the meantime rest it when you can, with your leg up and supported. If you do a search on this forum using the term Baker's Cyst you should be able to pull up all the threads that have mentioned it and find some more information that way. DD

    Hello,

Finally get my scan tomorrow but due to the doctor being away and then going on holiday myself I wouldn't have got the results till early July.

Luckily after seeing the doctor yesterday for something else she has managed to fit me in sooner before I go away.
Also given me a load of blood tests, there's about 8 on the list for Rheumatiod arthritis and myaliga, so as long as i get them done next week should also be ready in time for when I go back about the scan.

Hopefully the next 2 wks fly by so I get some answers, I now confirming it's Rheumatoid will not be good but at least I will know and get some help.
