Black Tie Dinner

In a couple of weeks time me and 'im indoors are orf to a Jubilee din-dins. It's going to be a black tie effort so I've bought a Gok-frok from Sainsbriz, it has a knotted front and plunging neckline - get in Daisy! - somewhere I have a pair of flat black velvet shoes which don't fit but will suffice and jewellery will be silver and not too ritzy-glitzy. A friend will do my make-up (I never wear the stuff but look better with it). I am also learning to tie a proper bow tie so that he will look OK. But just what do I do with the props?

I'm torn between taking the bronze-coloured ones with black handles (they are very sedate) or digging out my old silver ones and 'blinging' them up. My thinking is obviously a red, white and blue theme using beads on wire. I can wrap them rouncd the stems - if they sparkle so much the better - or maybe just stick to clear twinkly beads. Or maybe not bother. It is just one night, I plan to be seated for most of it, I'll be meeting people who don't know me and who I won't see again so does it matter? I wish it was a pleasant dilemma but somehow it isn't. :( DD

Hi DD you just enjoy your evening, you think on the same lines has I do, these people I will probably not see again .....but then I have to make an effort...you go for the red white and blue.....if you have had a drink to many at least it will look good when being waved around...

Thank you both - ah Barbara, how well you know me. I'll investigate the beads-and-wire idea later this week. DD

OOh, lucky you! That sounds lovely.
The red, white and blue theme sounds good, very patriotic, but, will it go with your outfit? I personally, would go over the top with sequins, silver ones, to match your jewellery.
Hope you have a lovely time, whatever you choose.
    All the best'

I am not the best person to advise on looking good/blinging up for a night out but, hey, when did that ever stop me?

I am deeply shocked that Barbara would suggest you might have a drink, or several, too many but I guess she has a point.

You could go for elegant, in which case, I fear I cannot advise. I like elegant. I have seen it done. I do not practise it.

I'm more the practical sort. I noticed M&S had some Jubilee Cupcakes this morning, decorated in red, white and blue. Now, stick a few of these onto any of your props and you could hand them/wave them round if people became a bit peckish between courses.

I repeat, I am not the best person to advise......

I too like elegant but have no idea how it's achieved. I will have a trial run of the outfit - I HATE wearing tights but obviously will have to unless I opt for the other floor-length-black-jersey-cost-me-£7 dress - now that is tempting! - and as for the cupcakes:  I could stick one on each ice gripper, they're ideal for that! Sticky, you might just have done it . . . . . . . DD

    Hi DD
I would go for the bling....red white and blue for your props.
Who am i do advise you :o
I have got a meal out for the jubilee but its the arthritis branch that I belong to so at least they will all understand if I dont teeter in in massive high heels
For me I think its going to be a pair of smart white trousers, smart top and some bling and that will be it
Good luck and you and Mr DD have a wonderful time and be sure to tell us all about it...right!!!

    Love

I think the red white n blue sticky things sound brilliant.
Me being a bloke, well, what's the point in trying to advise? lol
Plunging neck line eh :o that sounds the right way to go from a blokes perspective :D
Also, somewhere to keep the afore mentioned cup cakes?

    Heya DD

Sounds like a really great evening. You could get your old ones and use some spray cans of red, white and blue and spray diagonal stripes on them and then in between where the colours meet you could stick some bling.

Really hope you have a good time.

When I was using a zimmer frame Christmas before last my
grand daughter wrapped it around with red white and blue tinsel.
    It looked pretty good.
What about a photograph of the plunging neckline? Can you
    incorporate the tassels?

Just don't get the tassels knotted to your props. Could be painful, not to mention embarassing.

I've been thinking further about this jamming summat on the ice grips and I I have a plan. My masseur is a dab hand at models and I rather fancy a crown and a corgi. I also have a small head square with horsey-type stuff on it - stirrups etc - so that could be tied like a small pennant. I might as well bring the propper-uppers into the spirit of the whole thing, after all I cannot deny their presence. DD

PS Has anyone seen the Marmite advert in one of those electric thingies outside their local supermarket? Two corgis in armorial pose either side of a crown with the slogan 'One either likes it or one doesn't.'

Are you allowed to do that to corgis  ? Wouldn't the RSPCA object  ?

Just read about your upcoming posh do ; suggest you go for fake union flag nails for the occasion ( B**ts sell them ) ; I wore some to a meal with relatives a while ago and was the talk of the restaurant , ( or just confirmed that I'm soft in the brain department ! ) . Jillyb

My nails, alas, are quite short at the moment so I don't think a flag would fit! I think I will keep them plain - or maybe have an American (it's not as white as a French, the tips are cream). I dug out the shoes and they are OK, flat black velvet but I am going to have to practise walking in them - I've lost the knack of elegant perambulation! The local Co-op disability store has pairs of black crutches - they are rather smart but splashing out £40 for them seems a tad ridiculous - mind you, they'd work for funerals too, wouldn't they? DD
