The short answer is 'no', Karen, but I'm bumping this up as it's getting lost. Hopefully someone can help.

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I know about eye problems, as I'll explain. I don't know if you have RA or inflammatory arthritis of any kind, but a big danger for people with inflammatory arthritis is uveitis, which is inflammation of the eye.

The symptoms are a severe, sharp pain, especially when you look at the light, redness (if its in the front of the eye) and blurred vision. It is an emergency, but unfortunately, not all GPs and A&Es are aware that it is an emergency and may even misdiagnose it as conjunctivitis. Some people don't have severe pain, but the vast majority do, unlike with conjunctivitis, which is just sore.

I know about this condition because my mother lost her sight due to chronic, misdiagnosed uveitis, and is a member of the Uveitis Information Group, whose goal is to promote awareness of this condition. She hopes preventing what happened to her, happening to someone else, but even though its been 20 years, we still keep hearing of cases where people have not had the correct treatment.

A good opthalmist (optician) should be able to recognise uveitis, and send you to your nearest eye A&E. If you're in London, go to Moorfields Eye Hospital emergency. At general hospitals, make sure you repeat the words "I need to see your emergency eye clinic specialist" until you get results.

Thankfully, once diagnosed, uveitis can be swiftly treated with eye drops, and this should stop any permanent damage occurring. My mum says that most cases are one-offs and unlikely to reoccur - she was unlucky. Also, most cases are in one eye at a time, which she was also unlucky in.

The most likely cause at the moment, of sore, red eyes is probably allergies. The oilseed rape is in flower and I'm suffering myself. Next it'll be the grass pollen, so hold on to your antihistamines. So I don't want to cause a panic, but do check out painful eyes and make sure your doctor takes them seriously.

Sorry for the scary post - I hope you'll understand my intentions.

    Hi Karen,

Flower I also have burning eyes but they are not good and have semi-detached retainer, a ton of optic neuritis and get eye migraine as well. They react with both the crohn's and pa so I can't say what it is that makes them burn.

What I do know is you must get it checked out as you and they need to know.

Are they dry as well and do they go red? Cris x

((( ))) and keep an eye on those eyes and if they get any worse or don't get better very soon please get someone (even if its an opptition) to have a quick look at them. Cris xx

Im not expert either but have auto immune disease and get lots of itchy eyes etc...Anyhow I find a mild salt water solution to bathe the eyes a few times a day does soothe them...May or may not be any help but thought id mention it..

Don’t know if this helps I used to wear contacts, 4 years ago at my check-up the optician told me my tears ducts we now to dry to wear contacts any longer, she said it was my arthritis, as it affected my eyes. I get very dry eyes and use drops most days, even the blower in the car makes my eyes sore, also I wear sunglasses as I am now light sensitive, maybe go and have an eye test

Hi Fowls. My optician said i had dry eyes which was caused by my RA. They were able to give me eye drops which really help. A good optician should be able to check it out for you.

spot on what Annah said above.
ive been there and got the tea shirt.

i can also recommend the western eye hospital on the marlybone road in london. almost opposite madame tusauds.

uveitus wasnt that well known as a factor of arthritis back then so after 2 years i lost my sight in my left eye as all they done was give me 60mg a day of steroids. i was sent the next day to queens square neuro hospital and had every test imaginable but with not much of a diagnosis.

i must admit since last year ive heard of lots of people have started suffering from hay fever that have never suffered with it before so this maybe something to do with your eyes.
might be worth asking your gp if a anti histermine tablet might help.

    Hi,
I'd say don't leave it long, as eyes are very delicate things and need a proper medical opinion quickly if they don't improve. If you can't see a GP doc go to A&E rather than leave it. A cold, damp towel or flannel, which is soaked in cold water, across your eyes for 10 mins or so may make them feel a little better.

I've just had an eye problem. It was a feeling of pressure and I couldn't bare bright light, walked around in sun glasses on one of the cold, wet days! Left it a day then went to the doc, couldn't drive so my husband took me and I saw the Duty Doctor, who said it was an infection and getting quite nasty, so gave me oral antibiotics. They have worked and I'm fine now but it took nearly a week!
Hope you soon feel better, its so nasty when your eyes are sore. I also get heyfever and this is a great time of year to get heyfever!!! :x Suexxx
