Hi - I'm 34yrs old and have severe Osteoarthritis in both knees. After 9 arthroscopies my consultant is reluctantly going to carry out patellofemoral knee replacement on my right knee only to begin with.

Has anyone else on here had this procedure? I would be grateful for any advice, concerns etc.

Hello there and welcome to the forum.

Nine arthroscopies :o That's a lot of arthroscopies by any standards. I can't really help in that I've only had TKRs (which have been brilliant). I do hope someone else will be along soon who might know more about this op. If not, the Helplines might be able to advise but I think you might have to wait until after the bank holiday for them.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Sorry I can't help... But i'd be interested to hear what people say - as I'm in a similar situation - as I need this done to both knees too......

My Consultant has said he could do both knees at the same time... :o as both knees are equally knackered as each other... Something to look forward too...!!

    Good Luck

Thank you for all your comments. I know this procedure in medical terms is still 'new' and no real long-term results are known.

I will let you all know how I have got on following the procedure which is 1 week away today!

I wish you the very best and I hope all goes well. My knees are in a state and I am waiting for new ones - only another two years to go! DD

    Hi

This has come up in discussions with myself and previous surgeon but as I really feel i need TKR I decided it was too big a procedure to undertake...I am nearly 10 years older than you but still considered young and have had to fight tooth and nail to get my TKR decision, even taking it to a second opinion 90 miles away in order to get the right treatment for me...

    Good luck

Hi Freesia - just a week before my scheduled op i received a call from the waiting list office saying they had to postpone the operation until the 26th June!!!

My consultant had been off the month prior and was not undertaking any major surgery until mid-July. That's what I was told.

Anyway, I'll definately let you know how it goes xx

    Hi
I've had both my patellas resurfaced, I'm not sure whether that's anywhere near to what is being proposed for you - but I had to have them done but it did make a massive difference to me.
I was only 26yrs when Secondary Osteo was diagnosed in both knees with left being considerably worse and I fought (with my Mum's support :) ) for the TKR which I had the following year. It is quality of life that is important and this is what we need to stress to the medical profession and be persistent
    Good luck

Hi there...I believe both my kneecaps were resurfaced when they operated in December, along with the lateral release ect... I'm still undergoing physio/exercise classes weekly... and hoping the old knees will last "as long as possible" The 'bone on bone' horrible grinding pain has eased abit (for now) but i'm still in daily pain, I just need to keep optimistic and hope they last as long as possible... then it will be in for two replacements....xx

Hi Elainex - This procedure involves replacing the trochlear groove with a metal plate and the back of the knee cap with a button so there's a smoothe gliding motion when bending.

I'll defo let everyone know how it goes

    Paul :)
