Update on my knee

Hi I had my 2nd opinion in Sheffield yesterday (private hosp.) very posh it was as well. What a lovely doctor he was as well, he couldn't understand why my knee hardly moved and yesterday was a good day lol..
He said that after 8 months it should be almost back to normal which of course it isn't.
So he is starting at beginning and booking me in for a asperation to see if there is an infection (which my own hosp.says there isn't), if so ,he can operate. If not its working out what and where has gone wrong but he can't operate until 12 months after operation due to knee still healing ,which will be beginning of next year.
One question though..... If there is an infection in knee, why hasn't it gone into any other part of my body ? that's probably a silly question

Eileen

It's by no means a silly question, Eileen but it's not one I can answer. I know that, when I had my revision, they made big efforts to grow some bacteria on bits of the old one and finally succeeded. That meant there was some infection there so they gave me lots of antibiotics in case there was some left behind and it affected the new joint. I never felt ill though so it clearly hadn't spread.

This sounds like a very good appointment and I'm sure the new man will get you sorted out at long last. keep us updated.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    Hi Eileen,

Gad you have done an update cus I was wondering how you had got on.

I am not totally sure of this but....

There is infection that can get into the bone its self. I think its in miline sheath that surrounds the bones.... Not 100% sure though but it will be contained with in the joint by the surrounding tissue that holds in the synovial fluid. (i think this is right but its a long time ago since I knew all this stuff) Its a different kind of infection to the sort that your thinking. Its not good to have though and I hope the bloods will hurry up as your would need antibiotics for that one.

Eileen there is a low grade type of infection that isn't really an infection in the bacteria sense that can get into the fluid its self and then you have the inflammation of the synovial fluid type so that's why (I think I renumber) it hasn't gone round the rest of your body.

A kind of simplistic version would be although it can get into your blood stream of course its not strong enough out side its pocket to do much. It has to have an accumulative mass and that's why they are checking the fluid as they will need to hit it hard if its there so it doesn't have the chance to accumulate somewhere else.. If you have it they will hit it hard with antibiotics flower and it usually responds well to the drugs so try not to worry.

I think that's sort of right but I tell you who know and be able to explain it better... the helplines either as a pm, phone call or on their forum.

I know the 12 month rule must be hard to sit on but hopefully they will get it sorted as soon as they can but make sure you get those bloods checked as yo would need anti biotic to hit it with. A ((((( ))))) and thank you for the up date cus I really was wondering how it was going. Cris xx

Thanks Cris for the explanation ,I just couldn't work out how I could have an infection without knowing. its just a case of waiting for the appointment now which I think will be fairly quick and should be a day in hosp. appointment...12 months waiting doesn't bother me,its already almost 8 months and I'm adapting walking on my wooden leg as I call it. although it does get frustrating when I want to RUN lol ..old wifies walk faster than me now

    Hi Eileen,

Infections come in many ways and guises. I used to know the families but have forgotten them except the sterpacopice cus I keep getting it  I go infected very easily cus of the circulation I guess?

Glad the 12 months is more behind you than in front of you and just hang i there as they will sort you out just it can';t be done quickly. Cris xx

    Hi Eileen,

Cris has explained it very well.

I suppose I would look on it that it's like we can get a bladder infection, tooth infection, nail infection etc they are just localised and if they spread that easily to other parts of our body we would just be a big blob of infection

I'm glad someone's seeing to you at last.

    Hi Eileen
Gosh I am glad you had a good appointment after all you have gone through, what a difference getting someone that cares and understands.
A couple of years ago maybe 3 now I ended up in hospital with an infection in my ankle bone, it just kept swelling up and the pain was horrendous,so I was taken in hospital to have it flushed out with ABs, and then put on oral ABs....touch wood I havent had any trouble with it since, and it hadn't spread anywhere else, I found that strange at the time, but there you go.
I do wish you well with it all xx
    Love

Hi I had aTKR 4 years ago and have just had my hip done on the same leg I had the other THR done 5 yrs ago. My hip is fantastic they both are even though it's only been 9 weeks BUT my knee is another story I haven't had much movement in my knee for a good two and half years the bend was only 30% and in a lot of pain. The surgeon thought it may be the hip with it being out of line making the knee bad. Well hip is now done and for the past 6 weeks have been having physio on my knee the bend is better 70% the pain is not (worse in fact) my consultant is reviewing the knee in 3months if physio doesn't work then its another operation. I am trying hard with the physio but sometimes it's just too painfull to do you are lucky you are having something done earlier I think it was my own fault for not going back sooner.Keep us posted on the outcome.

    Hi Eileen

and thanks for the update :)

Great somebody was so kind and that they also have a 'plan' :)

Loved all the explanantions about the infections. It would be fabulous if something as simple as that could fix your knee! Waiting for updates :)

    Take care

    Love
