Notwithstanding your long term health condition and any or all of the medications you are taking the biggest problem with alcohol is that it is a depressant.

    Thankfully I am not depressed!

Yes, it is a depressant but hey, it dunnarf cheer you up first! When taken in excess it also disturbs sleep which is another thing against it. I stand by the mantra that a little of what you fancy does you good - well it does me! :) DD

people who have drunk in the past do seem less likely to get RA than those who have abstained or are teetotal. only the results of one study.

kathleen turner is an example of rinking whilst on RA - she has gone from a beauty to a real wreck.

ALL RA meds can have damaging action on the liver so topping it up with booze is not a good answer.

socialising is good for the spirit and helps you chill out if you need it but long term alcohol is not good for your body.

i didnt drink or smoke when i was 3 or 4 yrs old but i still got RA at that age.

alcohol is toxin and smoking is toxin - our bodies could best do without them.......if we have RA

Ye gods. Kathleen Turner has had RA for years, is now an older lady and fought to keep working whilst she could. Good for her I say. Luckily for me I've never had much in the way of looks to lose - there are some small mercies in life.

You aquired RA at a young age thanks to your genetic inheritance. What triggers it varies from person to person - for some of the ladies on here it has been pregnancy, for others infections. No-one really knows what can set it off but one thing is true - we're left living with its ghastly effects and bl**dy hard work that can be at times. Cheers! DD

Oh DD.. Kathleen ain't a patch on ya
    Lol
My word, this has been an interesting read.
I don't drink now, haven't done for many years.. However.... I used to drink heavily, fifteen pints of snakebite a night..
Now, I'm sure I won't go back to drinking. I'm a miserable bugger now and don't like being around drunk folks.. A real bah humbug...
Don't know why.. It's not in my nature to be that way, I'm quite a happy chappy but I just get wound up when I'm surrounded by drunken peeps... Silly really.

Hey tinker... Hope you find a happy medium with your home brew hun.

This is an interesting discussion. Interesting to see other points of view.

The decision I have made is to give away the bulk of my wines. Save one from each batch for myself. Which will probably leave me with 10 bottles.
Drinking only on the days I dont take codeine. Well not literally every time I dont take codeine but you know what I mean!
I am still going to make the wines but on a much smaller scale. Just the ones that I really do like. A demijohn holds 5/ 6 bottles so that is the amount I will make each time.

There is no way I would ever drink until I am falling down, but like wise I would not like to live completely without it. Its only the odd glass I enjoy so I will stick to that :)

I must disagree with the comment that 'all RA meds have damaging action on the liver'. That's just not true. I am on Enbrel and it's not the case that it affects my liver. It's true you have to be careful with pain meds and mtx, but even for the latter, a small amount of alcohol is not necessarily damaging.

We all know that excess alcohol is not good for us but, though I can't speak for everyone, most of us talking about a small amount.
Kathleen Turner might have overdone it a bit!

Herestinker, I do like your idea of making just the wines you really like, seems a good solution to a thorny problem!

    Hi Tinker,

Good decision that to enjoy it without overdoing it. You can send a spare bottle my way if you like

This has been a good thread to get other viewpoints on the subject.

Well, it's Friday and I shall have a glass of wine tonight as a reward for putting up with arthur all week. :D

Good for you, Herestinker, arthritis curbs enough of our lives so you carry on girl and I'll pop round every now and again to sample your wares! Any chance of a sloe gin? DD

 Everything in moderation is what my gran told me
I try to live up to that but fail miserably every so often.:D

I shall enjoy a little drinkie with my evening meal, or whilst making it. :D

You have gotta taste your homemade wines, Herestinker. :)

    Cheers!

    An excellent decision, herestinker.

I've been dry for two days but tonight we have something to celebrate. Others may plump for chocolate or creamy stuff - just as bad as alcohol - but for me (and Mr SW. We're very compatible on that score) it has to be wine.

Sloe gin, DD? Oh Yes! My son makes a good one and my brother makes a prize-winning one. (We are very close, especially in the sloe gin season  )

good for you Tinker hun. I'm sure that you'll enjoy every drop

Janet enjoys a drink, doesn't overdo it.. Had done heart specialists telling her to stop altogether then others saying moderation is fine. I'll be honest, I don't really like her drinking but that's literally me worrying too much about mi babes :D
I bought her two lovely bottles if red in frog land on the way home from our holiday..

DD.. I did used to enjoy gin, mixed with vodka

Not keen on sloe gin but sloe wine is more like it :)

My usual project at this time of the year is rhubarb and elderflower. Still going to do the rhubarb but not the elderflower. I will leave the little flowers alone so that they turn into lovely ripe elderberries. Along with brambles and that is one wine I cannot do without! LOL

I wish you could all come and have a glass or 2, it would be one way of getting rid of my stash

rhubarb and elderflower sounds interesting. Made some rhubarb jam yesterday, delicious but sounds nicer in wine.

Well for those of you who are interested I have now bubbling away 2 demijohns of wine.
One red with rhubarb and black elderflower
one white with rhubarb and white elderflower
All it has cost me is some juice for each DJ, a bag of sugar and a few pence for the yeast so should be around 80p per bottle!
both smell devine and I cant wait to sample :D

10 bottles of my stock given away so far, possibly another 4 today so its dwindling down nicely. I am making sure I save one or 2 of each type/flavour but the bulk is being passed on.

Without the risk of sounding like an alcoholic I am missing the glass or 2 of wine a week that I enjoy.

I am taking ibrupofen and codeine. Codeine says to avoid alcohol so I apart from one day where I deliberately didnt take codeine so that I could have a night out I have not had a drop.

My hobby is homewine making and I have lots of fresh fruit wines laid waiting to be consumed. (probably around 60 bottles)
It looks like I will not be able to keep up this hobby as I cant drink the produce :o:(
Also it looks like I will be giving lots away too

    Hi,

Don't give up your hobby if you enjoy it nothing wrong with a sip or two, and if you have that much you could always do a homebrew stall at boot fairs or some sort of occasions in your area like church event so your money you make could be donations, or for your favourite charity! Just some thought's.
